Show Heart Group Awards 7 Research Grants Dr. K. A. Crockett, president of the Utah Heart Association, announced this week that the organization has approved the recommendations of the Re- search Committee in naming 7 men in the state to receive a Research Grant for the 1959 year from the Heart Association. Grants this year will total $25,-625. $25,-625. This is in addition to the more than $11,000 going to research re-search from the Utah Heart Association's As-sociation's annual contribution to the American Heart Association. Dr. Drew Peterson of Ogden, chairman of the Research Committee, Com-mittee, indicated that they had requests amounting to wice the amount of money that was available avail-able for research by the Utah! Heart Association this year. He stated that 7 out of 12 requests had been granted. Those receiving receiv-ing the grant-in-aid allotments are: Stewart Harvey, Phd., $3,000, "Factors Relating to Myocardial Contractility and. Irritability." University of Utah College of Medicine. Homer H. Warner, M.D., $4000 "A study of the Factors Controlling Control-ling Heart Rate During Exercise." Exer-cise." Department of Physiology, Latter-day Saints Hospital. Hans H. Hecht, M.D., $3,000. The Quantitation of Digitalis Glucosides, Quinidine and Quin-idine Quin-idine Like Preparations on the Cellular Potentials of Isolated Mammalian Purkinje Fibers." Salt Lake General Hospital. Hiroshi Kuida, M.D., $3,000. "Pressure Volume Relationship of the Pulmonary Circulation; Establishing Cardiovascular Research Re-search Laboratory in the Cardiovascular Cardio-vascular Division of the Department Depart-ment of Internal Medicine." Department De-partment of Internal Medicine, Salt Lake General Hospital. George Veasy, M.D., $1,000. "Quantitative Differentiation of Diastolic and Systolic Shunts Through Ventricular Septal Defects." De-fects." 2000 South 9th East. Ramon L. Lange, M.D., in cooperation co-operation with Carlisle Smith, M.D. $1,125, "Investigation of Normal and Abnormal Arterial and Venous Flow Pattern in Humans Hu-mans by Radiographic Means." Department of Medicine and Department De-partment of Radiology, Salt Lake General Hospital. Joseph T. Blake, PdD., $5,000, "Pathological and Etiological Study of Brisket Disease in our Range Animals," Department of Veterinary Science, Utah State University. Hans H. Hecht, M.D., L.E. Viko Professorship, $10,000, University Univer-sity of Utah College of Medicine. Medi-cine. The project listed for Dr. Ramon Ra-mon L. Lange and Dr. Carlisle C. Smith is a continuation of research re-search supported by a grant last year by the Utah Heart Association. Asso-ciation. . The following received grants last year but for different projects proj-ects than those approved for the 1959 year: Dr. Stewart Harvey, Dr. Homer Warner and Dr. Hans H. Hecht. Dr. Petersen indicated that monies for these grants are made available through the annual heart fund drive of the Heart Association held in February each year as well as a few other contributions made throughout the year by interested persons. Dr. Peterson said that the Research Re-search Committee in working with limited funds closely analyzes anal-yzes the various requests and the type of work to be done by the men applying and then selects those they feel will accomplish i the most good toward the fight against heart disease in light of the funds available. As a follow up of the grants for research the Research Committee Com-mittee will be issuing reports on the result of such projects from time to time as certain conclusions conclu-sions are arrived at by these men doing the research work.
