Another meeting of . the privy council will be held today; reports of the absent ministers minis-ters on questions to be decided haying been received. It seems to be understood that the principal object of the meeting is to consider the action of President Presi-dent Harrison in the matter of the canal tolls. It is anticipated bjj those who appear to be well informed that the government will allow the status quo to continue. As there are only 6ix weeks of navigation remaining re-maining this season at the farthest, shippers ship-pers will be reimbursed the twenty cent toll by the government and it is expected that by the time next season's crop will have to be moved Canada will be independent of the American canal at St. Mary's Falls, as the canal on the Canadian side will then be fit for traffic. Hugh Ryan, contractor for the St. Mary's Falls canal, has Bent a special messenger to his cits to secure men for work which is to "be' carried on all winter in preparation for theijpening of spring excavations.. . , -iHk-acnt fcarengaeed fifty stonecutters who will proceed to work at once and remain re-main all winter. This action is in pursuance of an order from the government to push the canal to completion with all possible expedition. |
