Show CATIfOLIC SUMMER SCHOOL. The Church of Rome Starts a Chautauqua of Its Own. New Loxdon, Ct., July 30. The first meeting of the Catholic Summer school of the United States was held this morning in the Lyceum theater. Being the first event of the kind it marks an epoch in the history of the educational work of the Catholic church and is attracting attract-ing much interest, not only in that denomination, denom-ination, but in educational circles throughout through-out the country. The arrangements for the school were made by a conference of Catholic Cath-olic clergymen who met in this city for that purpose in May. The Rev. Morgan M. Sheedy of Pittsburgh is president of the society, lit. Rev. Father P. A. llalpiuof St. Francis Xaviers first vice-president, vice-president, J. H. Haaren of Brooklyn second vice-president," and Warren E. Washer of Youngstown secretary and treasurer. The following are the heads of the various committees: com-mittees: The Rev. Father McMillan, chairman chair-man of the general council; Mr. M. F. Morgan, Mor-gan, committee of arrangements; George E. Hardy of the commit ee of entertainment; Rev. Father Joseph 11. McMahou of the committee of instruction. The summer school is to be for Catholics what Chautauqua is for Methodists. The lecturers will be Rev. P. Halpin, S. J.; Dr. Maurice Francis Esjan of Notre Dame university, uni-versity, Dr. C. M. O'Leary of Manhattan college, Merwin-Marie Snefl of the Catholic university, Rev. Rone J. Holaind. S. J., Prof. John P. Brophy, Rev. Dr. J. Louhlin, Conie B. Fallen, Rev. D. J. O' Sullivan, Richard Malcolm Johnson, Rev. Dr. H. A. Brown, Rev. Dr. T. A. Kelly, Rev. George M. Searle of the Patilists, Charles W. Sloan, Rev. Thomas Hughes, S. J., Ernest Lagarde, Dr. Mare F. Valette, Brother Azarias, Dr. Richard H. Clarke, George Parsons Lathrop, and Dr. Charles G. Hebermann. The lectures lec-tures will be on ethics, literature, history and miscellaneous topics. Tomorrow morning Bishop McMahon of Hartford will celebrate pontifical pontifi-cal mass in St. Mary's church. The Rev. William O'Brien Pardow, S. J. president of St. Francis Xavier's college col-lege will deliver the inaugural address on "The Catholic Church and Reason." Atthe evening service the Rev. Morgan M. Sheedy of Pittsburg will speak on "The Church ! and Intellectual Development" The sessions ses-sions will continue until Aucust 20. A large number of visitors have already arrived, and many more who have signified their intention of attending the lectures are expected early next week. |
