I., Aug. 22 The twelfth annual tournament of the United States National Lawn Tennis association opened here to-day, although the contests proper will not be inaugurated until to-morrow morning. The site selected is the fine grass courts of the Casino. The annual struggle for supremacy over the tennis net attracts each season the most expert opponents of the game in this country, and it will require a week of continuous play to decide who shall hold the championship for the year, and carry off the massive silver challenge cup. What with the players and those interested in-terested in the game the tournament has attracted over 2000 people. Among the players are Henry W. Slocum of Brooklyn, Quincey . Shaw of Boston, A. Skaw of Boston, Oliver S. Campbell of Brooklyn, present champion, E. P. Hubbard of California, 8. T. Chase of Chicago, J. Tbbin of California, M. D. Smith of Philadelphia, Edward L. Hall of New York, champion of the South and New England, and, holder of the Txedo trophy, Malcolm G. Chase of Providence, and several score of other. A grand stand affording accommodation for several thousand spectators has been erected, and Newport's society will turn out en masse every day this week to witness the sport. |
