The services were very simple indeed, a brief prayer, a few gospel songs, then the reverend speaker entered upon his subject, "Christ, the Light of t lie World." He spoke of the light of ndture, how it guides men in'o in r ,', that is good and beautiful; beau-tiful; yet it erases tlie moon's pale, cold rays compared to the light of the Son of (iod. His speech was richly interspersed with beautiful figure and graphic illustrations. illustra-tions. Tho book Genesis tells us that the evening and the morning was the first day. So it had been in grace as in nature. The speaker was one day coming into New York harbor. The evening clouds gathered on the horizon as the sun sank below be-low the cobalt water-. Presently Ihc whole heavens were Illumined witli rays of srlory, bine, orange, purple, all came quickly and touched the grey clouds, decking them in robes of lustrous hues, as they nttcuded the the sun in his going down. So the people of earth have drawn imrity, strength, courage, cour-age, that has flooded the world with noble acts and upright lives, as they caught .the true beams of light which Hashed and Samed, glittered and gleamed, from tho sun of righteousness :i lie sank behind the hill of Calvary in the gloom of the crucifixion. A Franciscan moid,, famed for his eloquence, elo-quence, was once asked how he got his knowledge and hem o his wondrous power. He led them to his cell. No books adorned his walls, mi ancienl manuscripts lay around, but on the rod' wails hung figure of the Ornelfled One. Turning to it the father exclaimed, ex-claimed, "This is in- MSS.; thence comes my power, my zeal, my love for men." Throughout t! ,. i.-iioiu discourse the most intense interest was manifested by the vast audience.
