Show AN ENEMY OF SILVER. Iteprcsentnrive Hoar of Massachusetts 111. plains Why He Itcfusoil to Vote. Washington. Dee. 9. Sherman Hoar of Massacliiisctl s, w hen asked w by he did not vote lor speaker on roll call yesterday, said: "Last fall I staled that in the coiuinif contest con-test for the speakership I would vote for no candidate who would not promise his inlluence, inllu-ence, if elected speaker, airainst the consideration consid-eration of had financial legislation and of the extension of silver voimuru. When Crisp became the candidate of the party, I sent to hiin and asked him to g'ive me this promise, w hich he declined to do. There was then nothing for me to do but refrain from volintf for him. In my judgement, however, how-ever, lie will do exactly what he. refused to . promise-to do. namely, use his inlluence as speaker against the consideration of mens, ures lookfntf to the extension of the coinage of sliver. I feel fairly sure such will he his action, but as 1 could not get his promise, he could not ifct my vote. |
