Show EEP0RTS OX TRADE. LESS FAVORABLE STATEMENTS, BUT AN UNDERTONE OF STRENCTH. A Meeting of the State Street Paving Committee Com-mittee to be Held Tonight to Consider the Revision of the Specification Capitalists Visit the f.as "Well. Chamberlain & Co's., report says the unexpected un-expected seem always to happen. In September Sep-tember a full fledged boom was in progress, but now the outlook is less brilliant than it was before the rise, and no one can seem to tell why. The clearing house returns from fifty cities show a decline of 3 per cent from the figures of the same week last year, and many of the staples, notably all metals, fell off materially. The bright spot on the horizon is finance. Another couple of mil-I mil-I lions of gold has been shipped from Europe, j bringing the total thus far up to ?30,000,(HXI, i and the surplus reserve in the New York j bank has crept up beyond $10,00O,0O0.UO. It appears that the Rua.-ian shoitage in crops will be no less than reported, but France will require less The railroad stork market has been lower in spots and somew hat unsettled, but the undertone is one of strength, especially espec-ially on the part of large operators, and better bet-ter prices are looked fur. Om; of the ablest writers on finance says that '-the speculative movement, following very larie crops rarely d-velops until after "the New" Year. People arc too busy with their own affairs, and do not turn their attention to investment uutil their funds avr safely in the bank, aud huvs perhaps beeu lying idle awhile." - Home Enterprise. Mr.L,. (.'. Crossmau w ho has been back from the cast for some time, where-he had been to try and induce capital to come here and engage, in manufacturing enterprises, the question ofteuest asked hitn was: "What" are your own people doing to thow their confidence in the resources of your territory ? Are they investing their means in factories or are they tr3-ing to induce those living elsewhere to shoulder the burdens they should bear themselves?" To this iuteroga-tion iuteroga-tion Mr, Crossmau said he was bound to give a negative reply, but had he been able to answer it the other way, he could have raised thousands of dollars to invest in productive enterprises in this city. As it stands now. the city that bids the "highest for factories etc., is the place that arets them. Lots of questions were asked about the Deep Creek road and the assurauee that that lire would be built would alone bring hundreds of thousands of dollars here 1 - I'aving Specifications. There is to be a meeting of the committee tonight which was appointed at the last meeting of the city council to see if the specifications for the paving of State street could not be so modified as to make them more acceptable to contractors. Xonc of the members of that committee seem to have looked into the matter yet, and they will not for that reason venture an opinion of what they w ill do, individually or collectively. collec-tively. They wish to fully protect the city and at the same time give the contractors a chance. Monday is the last day for receiving receiv-ing bids for the work, but up to noon today none had been handed in to theboard of public works. This occasions no uneasiness as such proposals are usually held back until un-til the last moment. To See the Oas Well. A number of people took the train this morning to Lake Side station, where they will inspect the gas well w hich was recently-opened recently-opened there. In the party was a gas well expert from the east and a representative of New York capitalists, who w ill look into the proposition with a view to purchasing it for a syndicate. Since the last report on this well it has been sunk some ten feet more in the shale and a stronger flow of gas encountered, encoun-tered, the test showing the pressure to be 105 pounds, something which is quite extraordinary. extraor-dinary. The company owning the well is now getting iu the necessary machinery to sink a new well which will be ten inches in diameter and will be sunk until it reaches the sandstone. West Side Wisps. There is a movement started for the building build-ing of a manufacturing establishment at El Dorado. C. S. Wilkes is in it, and says that arrangements for the building of the works will be completed during the coming week. A representative of an eastern stove manufactory man-ufactory was in the city this w eek looking into the matter of establishing a stove foundry. He made his wants known through the AVest Side association. A boot and shoe firm iu an Indiana city is looking west for an extension of business, and asks the West Side association what the prospects are for establishing a concern of this kind in Salt Lake. It is expected that representatives of an Iowa manufacturing house will arrive in the city during the comingweek for the purpose of examiug into Salt Lake City's merits as a manufabturing center. P. Tavey, a former resident of Bingham, has put the finishing touches on his new building at Brighton, and started the store with a full line of drugs, paints and oils. Mr. Jones, secretary of the West Side association as-sociation has received a letter from a man in Florida who wants to trade Florida land for Salt Lake City property. 1 During the past week 1 here were visitors j at the offices of the West Side association from New York, St. Louis, New Orleans and Providence. A firm in Nebraska asks the West Side, association as-sociation what inducement they can get for building aud operating a broom and brush factory, j A lai'ffC number of men and teams are at work altering the grade, of the roadbed of 1 West Side Rapid Transit company uear Hyde j park. j E. W. Senior, the West Side rustler, who j was confined to his residence by illness during dur-ing the past week, is again on duty. The .West Side association is sending out large quantities of advertising matter, principally prin-cipally to eastern points. Colorado parties were in the city this week looking for a suitable location for a dairy aud creamery plant. ' All of the blooded horses belonging to A. G. Bast are at the Santa Anita stock farm for the winter. I Sporting men fay that deer are. roaming j among the Oquirrh mountains. Business Brevities, A sewer is being laid on Market street. Fifteen tons of sugar are being produced by the Lehi Sugar company daily. Articles of incorporation were filed with Secretary Sells yesterday hy the Oquirrh Ranch and Live Stock company. The second floor of the Ingersoll t Si-mondi Si-mondi block has been laid, and it is expected to have the whole building up to the third itory in a w eek more. W. C. B. Allen is in the east and is striking sonic sturdy blows for the welfare of this city, and is distributing some advertising literature which attracts a great deal of au tention. Mechanics in metal arc puttins: on the copper cornice of the Dooly block. They have nearly finished the wof k on the cast end. Tho stone work on the same buildiii" is being pointed. The Tribune says an effort is being made to consolidate the Rapid Transit and ths Salt Lake City Street Railway companies but the officers of both companies profess to know not hing about it. Everybody wants everybody else to put their hands into their pockets and raise the money to build the Deep creek road, as the citizens of Denver did to raise the tirst money to start the Denver & Rio Grande, the. Denver A New Orleans, the South Park and the Colorado Central railroads. |
