Show I THK WA It PORTFOLIO. j In spite of a positive denial from Stephkn li. Elkins himself, there is still a strong feeling in official circles at Washington that he will be offered the war portfolio. The report was published almost simultaneously with the first rumor that Secretary Proctor was to go into the senate. It has been revived from time to time during the past four or five months. Some half-dozen half-dozen other men have been mentioned for the place, but none of them have been received with so much favor as that of Mr. Elkins. He is a man- of affairs, practical aud clear-headed. He has been largely interested in the recent' development of West Virginia, and his appointment would be a graceful recognition of the growing importance of that state. Quite a number of prominent republicans, republi-cans, among them Andrew Carnegie, the iron king, Senator Edmunds, General Gen-eral Sewell and Mr. Proctor himself, him-self, have urged his appointment, Should President Harrison decide to make Mr. Elkins secretary of war, the appointment would meet with very general favor from republicans of all sections. |
