Bimixv, General Aont. l'OLIIB AT UIJDEN. A Grand Republican Rally Will be Held Next Month- -It Will b a Great Event. THE UTAH UNIVERSITY MUDDLE. Preparations for the Fourth of July Cel-ebrationOther Points of Interest From the Junction Oity, Special correspondence to The Times. Or. hen, June 15. The Oden and Weber county republican club has is-sued a call for a goneral convention of delegates from all republican clubs in in the. territory to be held in Ogden next month. Preparations are being made for a grand rally at that time. All genuine republicans should see that this first couvsntion is made a success. The railroads have willingly co-operated in this movement to disseminate American principles mong tho people. They realio the r"mportauco of educating the people to 'ostering home industries and develop-ing home institutions. If the time has pome for the citizens of Utah to fall into Jine on national issues, the republicans frbove all others should beup and do-ing Ttie democratic party with its f reo trade principles, is working eyery scheme characteristic of the organiza-tion for gaining a foothold. If the Voters are not properly educated as to the necessity of protecting American houses, institutions, miaes, flocks, herds and labor the enemy may by its flattery cause enough voters to Hock in from foreign shores and gain the day. Heuiember the dates, July , 10 and 11, and come prepared to give a reason for the hope that is in you. The republi-cans should make this a grand event and they will if the clubs attend to the matter promptly and select suitable delegates. t- -- i- --r-strawberries wer in great demand, as the rain had not made the berries unlit for market. Considerable business was transacted and not a little excitement created among dealers by their elfoi ts at bulling and bearing the market on different staples. Sa'es reported for tho week were: Butter, 5000 pounds; egijs, ViO cases; live poultry, flu dozen; green vegetables, 80.000 pounds; straw-berries, 3,000 casca; cabbage, 1 car; vinejjar, 1 car; wheat, 1 car; mill stuff, 5 cars; oranges, 2 cars, salt, 1 car. 4-- -- f- Republican meetings have been ar-ranged for . the different towns in this county, this week. Good speakers will present solid doctrine to tho large audi-ences that will assemble. All meetings will be hel 1 in tho evening on the dates set. Monday at FarrWcst; Tuesday at Five 1'oints; Wednesday at Fourth ward amusement hall and federal court room, Ogden; Thursday at Marriott's West; Saturday at Plain City. Local clubs have been organized at these placos and the membership will be largely swelled by the meetings an-nounced. , 4-- The Western Knight comes out this month under new management, A. J. Weber the former editor and proprie-tor finding it impossible for him to de-vote sullicient time to the publication has resigned. The paper is now issued under nianagnmcut of C. J. l'ettee an old time newspaper man. It is a very newsy little sheet and is devoted to tho interests of pvthianisin in the grand jurisdiction of Utah. t- t- A weekly democratic, paper will make its first appearance next Thurs-day. Henry C. Ilurd, formerly editor of the Utah State Democrat and at pres-ent publisher of the Saturday Evening Call, will be editor and proprietor of tho new Clevelaud free trade journal. The Call will be discontinued and an eight page paper printed every Thurs-day will take its place. Mr. Ilurd is an old hand at the newspaper business, but like manr others will evidently waste his substance on the desert air in trying to educate the people of Weber against their own interests. They want markets for their wool, grain, fruit, vegetables and miuerals and democracy fails to supply such de-mands and therefore it is and ever will be very unpopular. --i- - meets at the county court house to-morrow evening. Some important business connected with the work to be performed will be transacted. This society has been organized but a short time, but its object are good and it should receive a liberal patronage. All members are desired to be piebunt at the meeting. Three building permits were issued by the city engineer last week. The buildings which are for five houses will cost $lo,H. K. C. Reinhardt will erect a two-stor- r brick and si one building at a cost of $9Nj!). to be completed within ninety days Alf. Nelson will finish a $4000 one-stor- y brick within thirty days. W. L. Coffin will complete three one and one half story frawo buildings cuoiiug $1900 each within ninety days. -- -- --t- The Ogden driving park will have a three davs' series of races on the 2!ird. 24th and 25th of this month. The purses nggrcgate IfoOOO and will be sought for by a great many jockeys. Entries will be made from Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Utah. They have a tine one and a half mile track located oae mile west of Ogden. These races will be attended by a great many people from Salt Lake and neigh-boring cities. -- 4- 4- The Ogden Musical society will hold a meeting at tbe New West Academy hall this evening. It is desired that all member and those wishing to become members wiil"CB in iietya'4JJK'Tm-ne-society will furnish a musical treat on Independence day, with a chorus of 100 voices. 4- --4- --4- Children's Day was appropriately yesterday at the cbnrches. The Method'ist church was nicely decorated with evergreens and llowers and the exercises were well rendered. Rev. J. Wesly Hill delivered a dis-course on the objects and history of Children's day in the morning. In the evening one of the nicest programmes ever witnessed was carried out by the children. A large audience greeted them, and went away well pleased with the entertainment. -- 4- - The republican club at Tlain City was organized with fifty members com-posed of some of the most solid and substantial citizens. It has increased in numbers at every meeting and will MARSHAL'S SALE. Deputy Marshal. Salt Lake City, Utah, June 15. iwl. , At the recent conference of the Meth-odist church the people of Ogden were given to understand that unless imme-diate steps were takeu to defeud the rights of the university directors to the laud upon which the building is to be erected, the project would be aban-doned. This meant of course that the uuiversity would be located in some other cit'v of the territory. Citizens have takeu the matter in hand and after holding two meetings aud ascertaining the exact situa-tion have decided to get to work. A. II. Swan who has entered suit for the recovery of the lands given to the Uuiversity, hits offered to compromise on condition that the building is com-pleted John Heddesman, the con-tractor whose claim for ilO.lO for work on the foundation remains unpaid, oilers to accept lots in half payment. Several new officers are to be ap-pointed, and the work will be resumed this week. It is now the general senti-ment of the peoDle interested that .the university can and will bo built in Og- - James F. Wadman of Plain City, one of Thk Timks' daily readers was visit-ing with his wife in Ogden yesterday. Jim is one of the officers and a stanuch member of the Plain City Republican club. He is a sheep owner, and knows by aitual experience the effects free of trade principles. Only a few years ago the infamous Mills bill was being by our lawmakers at Washing-ton. Cleveland was agitating his free trade measures and the financial condition of the entire country was undergoing a panio in consequence. Wool dropped and Wadman sold at the Mills bill panicky prices. In the fall when it was decided that the bill would not become law and business was again restored to a proper basis inferior fall clip southern wool sold in Nephi at a J cents. A lit-tle figuring showed that Jim bad lost just $7.j0 on his wool that season. John Spiers another Plain City republican Continue llll a uig iveyuuntau m.ju.u, is rolled uu at the next county election. Our rural neighbors realize that at least four fifths of their produce is shipped to the mines and that under Democratic rule the mines would be compelled to shut down and thereby spoil the market. It means money to be re-publicans and poverty to be free traders. - Three car loads of California fruits passed through last evening forChicago. They were loaded with good Rocky Mountain ice to keep the fruit cool on the route. The express cars are all filled every day with California and Utah fruits going east and north. 4- The Times newsboys are uniformed with caps and belts upon which the word Times is very cicely printed in gold letters. They aro all members of the Isews-bov- s union and aro perfect hustlers. When the Union Pacific train arrives at 5 o'clock, the boys are on hand and in a few minutes a half dozen voices can be heard calling out "here's your Salt Lakk Timks." All about the royal gamblers, church row, Josie 1 1 ill, Chin-ese butchering Christians, Salt Lake Evknini Timks. Only a nickle, the thwentieth part cents pays for the Salt Lake Times. tleu. -- 4- The Fourth of July celebration con-tinues to increase in magnitude with every meeting of the several commit-tees. Fire departments, brass bauds, merchants', officials, base hallists and scores of others are daily answering in-vitations bv stating that they will be in attendance". The ( igden Musical society with a chorus of 100 voices has tendered its services. Over one hundred meu have notified the committee that they will fall into line. One lloat will carry thirteen children ap-propriately representing the thirteen colonies, while another will carry the fnrty-on- e stales and live territories. Utah will stand alone and be arranged on an elaborate sc.aie. Societies from far and near will be present and assist in the grand celebration. -- Even the old settler prophets and weather prognosticalors have been bullied this season. The continued rains are subjects for comment everywhere, li'o irrigation is needed and all crops are coming on nicely without any assist-ance. The only objection being raised is that tho hay erop cannot be harvest-ed between showers. Another very noticeable feature is the absense of neighborhood quarrels over the proper division of water for irrigation purposes. One gentleman in talking with Ihe Times mau about the watur question said he thought the rain was coming as a blessing upon the people for becoming a part of this great nation by throwing aeide petty religious quarrels and join-ing the republican party the only American party in existence. It is the only party that protects American farmers. -- The produce exchange for the closing day of last week was very much dis-turbed by the rain. Brigbam City was given a Siuu iree traue icsouu m the same manner. Those men are re-publicans not only from principle but because American protection put at least $700 to $1000 per year in their pockets. Their herders, butchers, grocers, farmers, gardnera and all others from whom they purchase sup-plies should be republicans on the same principle. Mr. Barnes of New York will be one of the attractions at the Grand opera house this week. The play is billed for Wednesday evening and as usual will draw a good house. The Twelve Temptations billed for Friday will till the opera house to over-flowing if the posters are any index to the play. Scores of people stop and gaze for" minutes at a time on the gaudy siiow pictures. One man thought the bilis must be advertising Barnum. - The Women's Christian Temperance union has another meeting at the Methodist church this afternoon. This organization is doing much missionary work in the city jail, hospital' and re-form school. They report good treat-ment from officials wherever they go. At the meeting today the youog ladies will take the lead. Mrs. Carrie Smith will deliver a recitation, "The Orphan's Prayer;" Mrs. W. J. Morning will give a select reading, ' A duett will be sung by Mrs. B. F. Stacey and Mrs. C. B. Knox. H- - 4- Witing, one of the New West teachers, has been appointed a dele-gate to the convention of Young People's Christian Endeavor society that meets in Minneapolis in July. She will make an able Ogden representative and will start on her mission this week. " The Ogien Charitable association Notion at Removal.
