It is unfortunate for Salt Lake that it has nut attained the position to which it is entitled in reference to the smelt-in-industry. At present the chief con-cern of the Wood river miners is to get Tiik Italian government would no doubt bo disconcerted if the American minister should bo recalled. Tho e announce that such a step is among the possibilities. Italian bluster lias certainly gone far enough and it is time for this country to resent it. fore tho public mind awakened til tho danger of the situation. In esse of war, the government would send the unnaturalized Italians back home, while tho people would see that a pood many who have becomo citizens followed the others across the ocean. Thousands of the most ignorant of them havo secured citizenship for political purposes. They have been used like cattle in elec-tions without being qualified to discharge a single duly of citizenship. There is no reason why any distinction should bo made between such as they and those who are still subjects of King Humbert. The law could not interfere with them, but they would be made to understand that Miey were not wanted and would not lie tolerated in the eoun-t.iy- , and a wholesome cleaning out would result. War is a terrible thing, but if our national gates should be mado to "open outward" in the future, in-stead of inward, n lasting blessing would have been secured. IT WOULD UK A IlLKS'IMI. The foregoing presents a view of any possible rupture with Italy in such a light that it is tlifficnlt to avoid the con-clusion that a.war would be a blessing in the end. VVa have kopt our gates open to unrestricted immigration so long that we havo loaded the country with a class of people who are undesirable in every respect. There is bo way to get rid of tho hordes that have already poured in excepting through expulsion, and this could only be done in the event of war. We can utop the influx but that will not relieve ia of the evil that has already been built ' up, If the immense immigration of the class represented by the "dago" could have been foreseen, provision would havo been made against it; but, like the Chinese, they became a menace be- - 1 i For KHEE TREATMENT at the Greek Medical Surgical Dispensary, Until M;iy 1. English tinancial circles are consider-ably disturbed by tho discouraging re-ports of tho condition of linancen in llie Argentine confederation. It is not ap-prehended, however, that anything like a serioiw panic will ensue, or that there will be any considerable disturbance in American business centers. Tho gen-eral tendency in money matters is fav-orable, and now that the tide lias turned in the right direction, it will require something out of tho ordinary course of things to check it. A AII AIII.K ri'HI.U A1ION. Messrs. Yoimi V: FAl.KKMil lifl will soon issue a pamphlet that will be valu-able as a cuide to visitors, and that will be an effective advertisement of Salt Lake City. Its title Is, "Points of In-terest to tho Tourist," and it will be distributed with the compliments of the business men of (lie city. The pamphlot will embrace forty-eigh- t pages, its sie being six by seven inches. Kach page will contain a de-scription of some interesting feature of the city, the margin being devoted to advertisements. It will be so arranged that the tourist can travel all over the city with it as a guide und post himself thoroughly regarding every historic or otherwise attractive point. Tho chamber of com-merce has indorsed tho project and will distribute 10. (KM) copies of the pamphlet. Tho following card from the president of that organization has been furnished to the gentlemen who are interested in the enterprise. Salt I.akk fJixv. The three great "acts of his senatorial career were the creation of the electoral commission which seated Hayes, secur-ing tho passage of the Pacitic funding bill with the aid of Thurman, and pass-ing the Kilmunils act for the suppression of polygamy in I'tali. lie is a man of scholarly attainment. W hile there are incidents in his public career which cannot escape criticism, he will never-theless fall away from the tierce glare of public life with his private character unsullied and his personal integrity above suspicion. A National Candidate. Kansas City Mar. Mr. Watterson's rigorour arraign-ment of the New York democracy, with a shin notification to Air. Dana's Sun that it is pretty small potatoes, is com-plete with one exception. Ho forgets 10 say what Mr. Caruth of Louisville has confessed, that Mr. Cleveland is the ciindiilate not of New York but of the national democratic party. Tiik controversy over the character of the Stanley expedition through Africa continues. It is held that ho was bru-tal and the evidence seems to sustain the assertion; but it would be presumpt-ion? for any one comforted)' seated by a blazing fire in Kuropo or Amorica to decide what an explorer should do in the jungles of the dark continent. Stanley' career is often judged by the record of Li viNCSTtiNE, and the later explorer is not put in a very creditable light by the comparison. LivincisT'ink, however, went as a missionary while Stanley pushed across the country as a path-finder. It may be true that many of tho latter's collisions with the natives could havo been avoided, but it might have been years before the object of the trip could have been attained. It would certainly have been more gratifying to the Christian sentiment of the world if this reverse side of the picture of Stanley's career could havo been avoided; but the great fact is that ho accomplished more in the way of throwing Africa open than ail his predecessors combined, and in view of this record the public mind is slow to hold him to strict account for the de-plorable incidents of his trip. IMI'KOVK TUB Orl'Oltl UNIT Y. There is no doubt that Salt Lake is today the most prosperous city in tho west. It has not been boomed beyontl its resources; and in truth it has not been carried up to the demands of busi-ness. It is the universal testimony of visitors thatthere is a more healthy tone . here than in any other place west of .Chicago; and the feeling of confidonce is plainly gaining ground, while gen- - ral prosperity increases. Business men are so busy that they are often unable to lind time to go to their meals, and there is apparent on every hand that evidence of life which encourages everyone to vut 118 shoulder to the wheel. V Conditions here may fairly be j compared with those prevail-- i ing in Denver. 'Ihe papers of that city contain columns of adver-- . tisemeuts of trustee sales. In one pa-per no less than ten, lilling five col-umns, have appeared in a single issue within a week. This means that real estate obligations cannot be met and that the holders of loans are compelled to step in and lake the property hold as security. In Isalt Lake during 1S1K) there were only uine foreclosures all told, aggregating but $j:t,7Sl. Since the beginning of tho present year there linyo been practically none, while tho business failures during tho first three months of tho year were very small, both in number and amount. This comparison shows that tho city is on a sound basis. The tinan-cial (lurry was not so serious-ly felt here as in other places and business is free to respond to the inllu-enee- s that tend to a revival. A review of the existing conditions also showa what may be expected here in a busi-ness way if the opportunities presented be improved. There is nothing to pre-vent a long season of healthy growth, Imt it will bo more or less dwarfed if the ptoplo of the city do nut put forth every effort to forward the develop-ment of the resources upon which the business world must depend. Such a project as thu Deep Creek road should not be permitted to rest for a day. W hat assistance is needed by the pro-moters of such enterprises should be extended and every obstacle should be, cleared away from their course. With the favorable state of atlairs now pre-vailing, tho inauguration of one such improvement would crowd the present business capacity of the city to its ut-most limit. Tho possibilities of Ihe sit-uation ire so great that they cannot be and The Times would urge that reuewed vigor be injected iuto tho determination to make the most of them. I't urU Hoar." Iloston Olobs. The least of the New England states has long enjoyed a totally dispropor-tionate inlluonce in the Lnited States senate because of the ability and char acter of the men it has sent there. If smallpox, yellow fever or any other disi'aso of thatcliaractr were to attack any city of t'ie country anil make sueh ravages as have characterized la grippe in New York, Chicago and elsewhere, the entire country would be in a Mate of panic. Human-ity appears to be peculiarly con-stituted in this respect. The hu-man heart quails before one death dealing disease but is unriifllod in the presence of another. La grippe has tilled thousands of homes with sor-row during the present season but it dees not appear to be dreaded in any section. I'euple look on at the constant procession of funeral corteges without .seem ing to realize that the country is in the midst of tho most fatal visitation that has occurred in years. To be sure the disease is not loathsome in character and it is virulent. The proportion of deaths uniting those at-tacked is not so great as in some other diseases, but as a scourge it has had but few equals. If it should return with the coming of another winter, the country would no doubt become seri-ously alarmed; but in any event the seasons through which it has already held sway will be known in the future as years of plague. Nevada In The Hwlin. Seattle ToleKniph. Jn his younger and more innocent days tin) Hon. Charles E. Laiighton tiro u sed for u while on the mountain sideit and ia the miuinir camps of Ne-vada. He conceived in this way a warmth of affection for that rotten borough of silverdom which clinps to him like a lirst mortgage lien. Any-body or anything that hails from Nevada or ever lived in Nevada, or can prove that ho or it, whichever the case may be, ever stayed over night in Nevada, can have anything in the gubernatorial shop This free masonry extends chiefly to whatever plums in the way of pat-ronage or iiillueuce dangle from the Governor's official Christmas tree. If there are any children orgrandehildren of Nevada present they reach up and pick what they want lirst, and if there is anything left of "the party" when they are satislied it is turned over to the cheap citizens who never lived in Nevada. For instance, there were ft handful of people who wanted tho judge-hi-p of Clallam county under the new judicial bill. Sone of them were so idcntilicd with the county that they actually lived lvhitlfin its 'limits. The Covernor fotiud. however, when ho cast his eyes over the expectant host that it contain-ed a dear old colleague from Nevada. This was James ti. The Judgeship was gracefully passed over to the comity statesman, who lias his (torn icile in I'ui't Townsend. Hut that cuts no ligure.
