Secretary Sells was sitting in his olline this morning when a Times man asked for information about the report that Judge Laney's ollico is vacant. The secretary said: "Judge Laney is a regular justice of the peace elected from the First precinct of Salt Lake 1 City. I do uot know whether or not 1 Mr. Laney is a regularly elected police 1 judge. However, the records 0' tho city council will determine the latter. We do not record commissions here but have a record of the candidate's election, elec-tion, his qualification and the issuance of his commission. Mr. Laney's commission com-mission was issued, and he never called for it. The same is true of most of the members of the city council. About the applicants for the office, I have only heard of two.". "Yes," replied Captain Addleman from beneath his Esquimaux cap, "the report was occasioned by my remarking remark-ing In this office that Judge Laney had not called for his commission. Somebody heard it and said outside that the office of police magistrate for Salt Lake City is vacant. If Mr. Laney had come to this office aud secured his .commission there would not have been any such talk. The law says every justice jus-tice and constable shall be commissioned commis-sioned by the governor and then thev shall be qualified to act. All this talk I if about nothing." Mayor Scott was met on Main street, and he said: "About the appointment of Judge Laney to the office of police magistrate, there was a vacaney at the time and he was assigned to the place. His bond was approved and all is r.ght. The whole talk is dnly bosh." |
