Coal has been found about six miles west of Fountain Green, but no vein of any value has yet been disclosed. Logan Journal: It is said that Hyde Park has had an opportunity to ship out 200 carloads of hay this year, and has been enabled by the railroad to dispose of nine. Nino out of two hun-dred. The fire inspector for Provo notified a firm that a building being erected by them was not in conformity with the fire ordinance of that city, and demand-ed the tearing down of the structure so far put up. The firm refused to do this and the court will probably settle the matter. Arthur Ivio, son of Frank Ivie of Pcipio, committed suicide on Christmas evening by shooting himself through the heart. Two of bis brothers were within ten rods of him at the time. As they saw the flash of the gun they ran to Arthur, but the spark of life was ex-tinguished. RAIDING A DIVE. The Itevnlllne; Condition of Affair K.-nl- td In a Dago's Den. The Italian hovel in which it was sus-pected that the plunder from the Fifth Ward Co-o- was buried, was defended on by o llieers this afteanoon and sub-jected to a thorough aoarch. The visit revealed a most revolting condition of affairs no less than fifteen descendents of the sunny laud being occupants of a single room from which the most sick-ening vapors were emitted. Nothing was found thai would indicate that the outlit bad perpetrated the offenses. 2BE Union - Pacific - System M The Only Line Running Through Cars to Denver.Missourl fl Iura4ZMJf!l Kiver, Chicago and St. Louis Without Change. 0 New Time Card, in Effect November 30th, 1890. The "Corsair." Tho famous comio opera burlesque the "Corsair," will be produced at the Salt Lake theater four nights this week beginning tonight. Its gorgeous cos-tumes, its magnificent stage settings, its charming music and its pretty girls, all combine to Induce the large constitu-ency for a good burlesque performance that exists throughout the country, to establish it as the best extravagan.a of the day. The management have every reason to congratulate themselves upon the fact that nothing better of its kind has ever been seen than the "Cor-sair," with its crowd of pretty women, its magnititient mounting, and the hi-larity that runs throughout tho ovening. It has been an enormous suc-cess in every large city in the country and there is little doubt but that the audience here will come near testing the capacity of the house. The Corsair'' is like a child's toy store, there are lots of pretty thing in it. Lila Wow, of the "Corsair" com-pany, is a graceful, sensuous sort of creature, and her presence is a con-stant reminder of the pleasures of life. A-- MONTANA NOTES' The Minor atlvocatns tho passage of a bill to give Silver Bow county another district judge, anil say give Juilge AlcIIatton another breathing spell." Butto Intermotint.iin: The popula-tion of Helena will lie almost cloublod this week nsal leastt 1)110 visitors will be within the gates of the temporary cap-ital. In Jefferson county during 18!)0 there Were filed l.'iOO mineral claims. It is Bafe to say that at least 1 per cent of these will gome d:ty develop Into rich and paying mines. In the caso of the State vs. Wm. Gal-lu- s at Miles City for putting poison in the medicine of Ole Grit's, the jury, after being otil twelve hours, returned a verdirt of guilty. Gallus was brought before Judge Milburn and given ten years in Deer Lodge for this flavoring act. New Smelter for San Juan, Rico News. The project now being agitated for the erection of a smelter on the line of the Bio Grando Southern meets with general approval by mine owners in this section. It is a subject that is de-serving of more than passing notice, and one in which all should feel an in-terest, aud more especially since the recent combine of eastern smelters. Bico's low-grad- ores will lind a suit-able market if a smelter is erected on the line of the new railroad. There are many mines in this district whose ores will not bear the excessive freight rates to Denver aud i'ueblo smelters and pay a profit to the owners. Cheaper transportation and shorter haul is nec-essary to make these mines valuable and protitable. IDAHO NOTES. Montpelier observer: The cheese in-dustry "of this section is simply enor-mous and with systematio handling could be made one of the most profita-ble. We would still urge the old ad-vice upon the farmers to feed bettor and if need be to cut down the number of cattle, half. There is no profit in scrubs. A few good ones and those properly managed would be a good source of revenue. Montpelier Observer: The road to Star valley has long been a Jonah" to travelers. So much complaint has risen in regard to the condition of the roads and bridges that a new road to Cokeville is seriously contemplated for the benefit of the farmers in the upper valley, who will then leave Montpelier I merchants in the shade and turn their trade to Cokeville. A road to Soda Springs for the use of those living in the lower valley is also in view. Gould and MoKluley. Savannah News. No doubt the McKinley bill had a great deal to do with weakening confi-dence. It Induced importers to import vastly more than they were able to pay for promptly, and hence they became discouraged, and, as Mr. Gould says, they imparted the feeling of discour-agement to others. And the threatened passage of the force bill unsettled busi-ness greatly, because in business circles tho belief was entertained that if the bill should become a law, trade relations between the north and south would become, in a measure, strained, and the tens of millions of dollars of northern capital invested in the south would bo jeopardized. COLORADO NOTES. ' The banking house of Hunter & West at Greeley, has gone undor. Mr. West is the geritlemau who has long aspired to bo state treasurer. His canvas may have had something to do with bis heavy indebtedness. The large output of the San Juan mining counties will be still more in-creased, if not doubled, by the comple-tion and opening next spring of the Kio Graude Southern road, which enter-prise will give a very decided impetus to mining in that section. Ad organization of farmers was re-cently effected at Denver, and an or-ganization formed called Tho Farmers' Protective association. S. R. Pratt, formerly of Gunnison, is president. Ir-rigation and other interests of the farm-ers are those to ba protected, for which legislation will be asked. At last one of Pueblo's best known and popular bachelors, who has been considered as proof against the charms . of the fair sex. has capitulated. Judge M. J. Galligan, whose good looks is ex ceeded by his modesty onlv. nan mar-ried on the 13th ultimo at Jew Hamp-ton, Iowa, to Miss Minnie Bailey, an accomplished and beautiful belle of the latter place. The Liurlington & Missouri is reach-ing out for another coal mine in the Union Pacific territory, the Excelsior, at Lafayette. A switch is being built to that mine from the Lafayette depot. If this company continues in the same Mind the coal camps will soon experi-ence a blessed relief and even Boulder may get a competing line. Having Money. New York Sun. "Why do you live In the country, anyhow!" asked a New Yorker of a suburban friend. "To save money." "Is the cost of living less?" "Xo. Slightly higher." "Then how do you save!" "No opera, $.)0 a season. No, con-certs, $25 a season. No theaters, $."0 a season. No big dinners to friends, $100 a year. No fuu of any kind, $500 a year." "istiy," said the city man, seized with an inspiration, "wouldn't you save money if you died!" Kather Htertlloe; Comparison, Buffalo Courier. The amount of money levied and ex-pended for pensions will soon exceed the aggregate amount expended for the maintenance of public schools in all the states and territories ot the union. The Btatemcnt seems incredible, but it is sustained by the record. JlCrttltO. DIED Walter L. Shannon, afrej four months unl ix days. Infant chiij of Mr. and Mrs. It. L. Shannon. The Mnii With a Grleveoce" and Soolety. New York Sun. "The man with a grience" ig now in-furiated on account of his exclusion from certain social circles in this city. Why" he exclaimed, "there is not a man of genius in the world's history who would be a welcome guest in the fashionable sets of New York. They wonldn't tolerate a piaywriter like Shakespeare if he were living now, they would despise a printer like lien Frank- - lin; the great inventors were common fellowa whose presence they wouldn't endure; do you suppose that poor John Milton could has gotton into their soci- - ety? The great composers and artists would never have been invited to their parties; they would not have spoken to such a person as the ploughman, liobert Burns; but some of them might have tolerated the lymph inventor for a balfhour, because they have the lupus or suffer from the bacillus. Teere is no science or poetry or potency or genius io our fashionable, brainless society, and there is not a star of inte - loct who could enter its ranks or stay there. It is not high-tone- if the word tone has any meaning." At this point the "man with a grievance" began to J read some passages from his latest dia-tribe against the ways of the world. |
