Jan. 7. The closing arguments in the proceedings against House Clerk Jewett were made yester- I day, ami the court dismissed tho case , against him on the ground of want of I jurisdiction. This decision leaves the r entire matter of making up the roll of members in the house in Jewett's hands I and the admission of the "If entitled" members will result in the election of I Tuttlo. republican, for governor, and a republican United States senator. The court was unanimous in its opinion, j the two democratic judges concurring with their republican associates. ; The house this morning resumed the balloting for speaker. Three ballots were taken but no change from yester- ; day was made. By direction of Gov- 1 ernor Goodell the members of tho police force scattered the crowds about the state bouse this morning. As the members of tho senate and house filed up the stairs it was necessary for them to identify themselves as members-elect of the legislature. At the democratic caucus placing of policemen in the state house was severely se-verely denounced. Both houses were called to order about noon. In house Clerk Jowett proceeded to call the list of members prepared by him, included in the roll were names of all"lf entitled" members who presented their certificates, certifi-cates, also those from towns showing , a increase in population under the census cen-sus of 1800. Omitted from it were those from former classes or pro rata towns also the names of members mem-bers from Meridith, on account of improper certificates. Clerk y Jewett announce,! that a constitutional number of representatives appeared to ' " be present and directed the sergeant-'' sergeant-'' at-arms to administer the oath of office. The roll prepared by Clerk Jewett contains the names of 179 republicans, and 158 democrats. After the members had been sworn Gallianger was elected temporary chairman. The democrats made no effort to obstruct proceedings. |
