Show I It is amusing to observe the manner in which the southern statesmen kneel lo the Farmers' alliance when the pressure pres-sure is applied to I hem. Senator Cam. j of Florida is the latest supplicant. He joined in the chorus of derision with which tho sub-treasury scheme was greeted; but he is a candidate for reelection re-election and the alliance is opposing him. The case is a desperate one and tho senator has issued a circular protesting pro-testing that ho is in favor of the sub-treasury sub-treasury plan in a modified form. It. is an unusual experience for the southern leaders to be compelled to hold specilic opinions in accordance w ith anythiug liko a popular demand. Just how sincere sin-cere the opinions imbibed under thco conditions aro is a matter of con jecture, bir. it is more than probable that they will be held subject to change without notice when they shall have served their purpose. |
