We nil know that the manufacture of tho commoner grades of plato iu this couu-try couu-try has relieved the consumers of the monopolistic robbery that had been practiced upon them. Hut there are figures and figures in connection with the prices of window glass; some are reiiablo ligures and some are unreliable; and it will do just ns well to know the truth. The Herald seeks to make it appear that tho price of window glass has been held up to high ligures in tho I'nited Stales while it has declined heavily in foreign countries, tho inference infer-ence being that the tariff has thus caused a discrimination against the American consumer. The paper quotes prices that ruled in lSiit), and those that it claims to have prevailed at some time in WM. They show an average decrease de-crease of only 8 per cent. The paper proceeds lo quote foreign prices in 1W7 and in and finds a much larger reduction, re-duction, tho decline having ranged from "It per cent on the smaller to (i."i per cent on the larger shes. Hut tho Herald's figures on domestic prices are not fair in any sense. In 1MI0 all prices were boomed. About election time there was a craze for rushing prices up. It had been claimed that the Mi. Kini.ey law would advance nil values, and dealers in all lines weut cru.y on tho subject, many goods being marked up that could not possibly be affected. To get at anything like a fair showing we must take prices not so jnlluenced. During the years of tariff, the price of window glass has not only boon reduced, but an itntnenso industry has been built up in this country. coun-try.
