' On Girl M ho Ulla Ttiem Shrewdly, and Om AVIio I ki Them Curlnuely. ;, A penlal old prontlmiian was buying violets from the flower girl on Broadway. 'Well, I'm getting to be a pretty old customer, eh, Katie," his observed, as ho lirrauged tho flowers in the lapel of his f overcoat. i "You've been lmyin' flowers a good many years, sir, but you're not old yet," replied Katie, with tho ahrewd flattery of her sex. "I like to see a ientleman weir flowers, especially a middle aged geml.'inun. Unit his heart ain't growin' old, an' it shows ho likes what's nn' clean. I notice a lot of the gentlemen lose their grip in that way when they get along." "How do yon moan they lose their grip, Katie?" asked tho gentleman, i "Oil, they get over carin' for vi'let I when thrv get married and bus f.uu- - f! Hies," replied the flower gill. "I see a , lot of youn:,' fi t llers dressed np (iiv goin' I alon.ir here fur a few years, an' they nil I j Wear flowers in their coats. They are all bright, just like the flower, und you can't help likh' Vm for it. That's when they're mr.shers an' when the yirls care for 'cm, "Then they jet married, an the firt thing they drr p is the flWers from their i coats. That t.ike:i aw.iyall thsir bright ness, an' then it does seem ns if tin y :rt of (lu.ty, an' a if thrir hats wero f)ld or nut hnished. (Jneo in a while, though, u gentleman iretn married an' ' grows a liUlo old an'still he bnys i'letd. lilto yon do, sir.. Then I tliitiK' he muvt be a nicer sort of man than the. rest, an' probably is wry happy at home with a good wife an' children." i Tho old gentleman Unshed, and j hummed and hawed. "Humph! l!'iw what's the price of those, roses, Katie? Tluy look very fresh.". "Two dollars a dozen sir, and they're fresh cut this morning." "fliimph! Haw well, pick out two dozen nice, ones and send them to my wife. Heie! This is my card. Good mormmc, K:;tie." "That's a nit-- said Katie to herself, as thocustoiiier walked away. "I aess I remiieied him of his wife, ' thuiix'n. That's ht) way willi the best! of 'cm. They never iorget tlieir own bnUonhoIes, but they think a woman: don't need any more roses after her hair begiiw to get gray." . A girl who is RUch an extreme Wle and favorite that tho men hIu known1 Purden her with lluial meinentiifi o: their regard has many strange und po ctic ways of her Bupeifluoui liimquets. This, she dc-- (dares, saves tho trouble of thinking the I (piestion over, and gives nil equal chance f to nil her admirers, j She then has her maid pluck all the j petals from the tow that are left, and I these nre saved until the next morning, ! when, after coming out of her bath, they are poured in a over her, and she stands among them while her toilet if ( completed. All the violets aro collected together each night, and after they are thoroughly mixed the dainty maiden makes np a small bunch, which she fast-ens at tho neck of her nightgown. Those that aro left uro tossed over her bed after she has retired. The orchids are made into as large a bunch a3 possible and suspended from tho chandelier of her bedroom. Its result is what its motives must never bo or tho result fails an immeasurably greater and better aggrandizement of self than any self necking can possibly attain. A strange discovery was inado at San Francisco tho other day by the workmen engaged in blaring dowti the old land- - mark at the northwest comer of Mont-gomery and Commercial streets. Whilo removing tho marble ilabs which cov-ered thy lioor, a (itairway was discovered which led down to a vault umbTthe building, the existence of which was un-known. The vault extends tho entire length and breadth of the super.-tnict-ur- It is built of bricks placed length-ways, which were separated by pieces of f late, the whole being firmly cemeuted into a solid mass. Tlie roof was arched and constructed in the s.nne manner. At one end cf the vault was an apart Jiient, built in an unusually solid man-ner, to which an entrance was effected by a door of iron a quarter of an inch thick and riveted With bolts. A piuneer furnished the information that the building, or at least the first story, w is erected in 1VM, for tho occu- - pation of August 1'e'iuont & Co.s' bank- - nig house. Tho conflagration of ls:9 had swept every Ptrncture in tlie vicinity out of existence, and when the building was erected it was determined to make it fireproof. The basement was where gold bullion and coin were stored, and it was built to resist burglars and defy fire. E'eu among the then residents of the city the existence of the vault was not generally known, and the method of reaching it was a secret confined only to tlie bank's employes and to t ho workmen who constructed it. San Francisco Let- - i ter. f Tim Men of Welillni; Wlieels to tlio Track. , An invention is now undergoing inves-- r tigation which promises the improve-ment of railway trafiic. Tho invention . consists of a small dynamo and an au.il-- . iary engine placed upon tho locomotive . in such a way as to be easily operated, furni.iliing a current of small force but . large quantity, which is made to pass , from one pule of the dynamo to one pair of driving wheels, thence along tho rail to the other pair of driving wheels, thence to tho other pole of the dynamo, thus forming a traveling circuit, moving at all times with the locomotive. By means of this current an incipient weld is caused between the wheels and rails nt the point of contact, preventing the slipping of the wheels. The work-ing model of tho device shows an in-crease of 400 per cent, in the hauling power of the locomotive. The model without the application of the current would not mount a grado of 15 per cent., but when tho current was applied it mounted a grade of 3o jier cent. A loco-motive is now being equipped with the invention to test it on the Baltimore aud Ohio railway. Exchange. An Importunt llfrlnion. The snpretne court of Rhode Island has just Bt't fiHide a will probated fifty years hj;o. The late Joseph Uret'ne, a (stanch Cjnaker, was greatly disturbed during his latter years by nienibers of his family Marrying without the pale of the society, und attempted by his will to be-stow his estate for tho benefit of those present whom he considered orthodox Friends, or Wilberites, as distinguished j from other blanches of the society. The will was uncontested until about two years ago. The property involved comprises about 120 acres iu the center of Jamestown, on tho island of Conanicut. The petitioner contended that the application of tlie es-tate rested upon the trustees determining the true and actual religions belief of the beneficiaries. While it is possible to Ascertain ose's rdigims professions, tho petitioners claimed that it is not within human power to ascertain belief. The court declared tiie bequest void. Ex-change. Iti'lirf In Sickness. It is a very old observation that a domi-nant idea is valuable in controlling the human being, and whether it lie in the bearing of pain or in the devotion which leads the Turk to die contentedly before the Russian bullets, belief is a factor that may be turned to great advantage. In-directly, Christian science may prove an aid to medical science. The intelligent physician of today conld receive no greater aid in the scientific practice of his profession than to be emancipated by his patients from the obligation invari-ably to prescribe a drug. When people nre willing to employ physicians to order their lives so that they may live in health, the custom which binds tho phy-sician to prescribe something for his pa-tient will be unnecessary. As we have become more civilized this state of affairs is gradually coming into place, but there still lingers tho expecta-tion that the doctor's visit means drugs. Christian science and faith euro, more refined than the spiritualistic beliefs which have preceded them, form an in-teresting study in mental pathology, and mark an advance from the grosser stage of table tipping and magnetic doctors to a recognition of tho fact that among the weapons employed by the scientific phy-sician of today un appeal to a determined purpose to overcome pain is worthy of a place beside antiseptics and anodynes and tonics. Century. An ingenious Frenchman has dis-covered a process of recovering the tin contained in tho wash waters of nilk which have been weighted, and ho has accordingly received from the French Society for the Encouragement of Na-tional Industry the prize allotted fur tho utilization of residual substances. It is estimated that Lvons alone will effect an annual economy of JOO.UOi). William Sprowles, of Charlotte, N. C, who applied for a federal pension in 1 WMl , received word.j'ecently that it had been granted. It will be of no use to him, as he died the next day after the news camo to him.
