Show Tho "OutHow of Money" Bother Him. Committeeman Frank J. Cole, of the Laundrymen's association, in an interview inter-view with The New York Sun, said that the welfare of the city and country depends de-pends to a large measure upon the eradication eradi-cation of the Chinese laundry evil. He said that there are at least 1,200 Chinese laundries in the city and vicinity, or six Chinese laundries to every American laundry.: This proves conclusively to him that the laundry is rapidly passing into the hands of the "Heathen Chinee." "It is safe to say," said Mr. Cole, "that if all their trade were handled by white people it would give employment to about 12,000. This is a large number of people to be deprived of their earnings in this industry alone. This is only the beginning, I believe. If it is left undisturbed, undis-turbed, in a few years the Chinese will so closely encircle this industry that practically the white people's portion of it will be of very small dimensions. The earnings of the Chinese as nearly as we can discover in New York and vicinity are not less than $2,500,000 annually, 90 per cent, of which is a total loss to the community and country. "From these facts it is apparent that our welfare and that of our fellow citizens citi-zens demands immediate action to counteract coun-teract and stop tins immense outflow of monev." 1 |
