Show THE BOARD OF EQUALIZATION. U Is In Sewipn and Prepared to Listen to Protests. The board of equalization is in session ses-sion m the county court room and it wdl remain in session until July 31st. All protests must be filed before that time. The board is made up of Probale Judge Bartch, Elias A. Smith, Kichard Howe and Orin P. Miller. Judge liartch being absent yesterday E. A. Smith was elected chairman. C. Caldwell was cited to appear before the board on the 2$th and show cause why valuation should not be raised Complaints in regard to assessed value of property were then heard. R. Pike of Mill creek claimed an over assessment, assess-ment, but it was denied. A. Helm made a similar complaint which was also denied. C. B. Niehfield's claim was referred to the assessor. C. Cald-wellt Cald-wellt jr., J. H. Cochran aud A. Auder-son Auder-son put in complaints of over assess ment. Caldwell's was adjusted, while the others were denied. Mr. J. R. Walker has submitted a paper in which ho protests that he is not assessed equally with other property prop-erty holders. The tax he claims is burdensome bur-densome and out of all proportion with last year's assessment. He appends a statement, in which he shows that his total tax for 18811 was $1000.50. while for the year 1800 he is assessed $3773.02. He also gives a detailed statement of tho difference in the assessed value for the two years of a portion of his property. prop-erty. In conclusion he says: " I ask your honorable board to make a fair and equitable adjustment of the same, aud would respectfully suggest that your honorable body take the necessary steps to make a fair and equitable adjustment ad-justment of this grievous tax, if you have to cause Jhe rate per cent to be cut down to, say, three to four mills on the dollar in place of seven mills, as I presume yon cannot go beyond the law to reduce the cash valuo 'of the property. prop-erty. I believe that by doing this you will avert inevitable law suits to settle the same, aud am of the opiuion it is your duty as servants of tho public." |
