Ho talked freely with au Associated Tress reporter last night on the results of the recent election and, referring to the new tarig law, said in part: "If it had much to do with the republican losses it was not because of the law itself, but because of a misunderstanding of its provisions among tho peoplo, and the studious efforts of free -trailers at home and abroad lo misrepresent it. The alleged al-leged markiug up of prices was the most telling agency of deception. The law was less than a mouth old when the elections occurred. Its effects could not be felt or shown by acilual ex- porlenco. Falsehood took the place of fact and Imposed upon credulous people. peo-ple. Goods were said to hav gone up in prices which have been placed on the free list in tho new law, and many articles where duties have been reduced, reduc-ed, were said to have gone up, all because be-cause of the new law. Time alone will vindicate or condemn the measure. Misrepresentation and deception will no lunirer avail, now the election is over. Those who care to know its evact provisions can do so by examination examina-tion of tho law itself, removed from partisan prejudice: "The people, in my judgment," said Major McRinley, "will stand by protection. They always al-ways have wlit'ii the issue has been presented pre-sented fairly." The major refused to say anything as to the policy of the re-pub'iean re-pub'iean party at the coming session of congress, or the ticket of the party for the next campaign. |
