JOHN FABNEAM BOYNTON i Alphouse Karr, the French WriterMrs. Katharine Booth of Salvation Army Her Curious Funeral. Alphonse Kar'r, long the oldest nnd nt I ne time probably lxwt known in other f lands of the French novelists, died a few I days as;o at his villa tit St. Raphael, I near Nice. Though 82 years old, he en- - I joyed excellent health until a few days Some 27,000 jioople were crowded into tlio Olyinpia, wliero tho iinlixr nervieea were holil, ainl gooil order prnvaili;il: but the route to ttw grave in Abney Park cemetery was tlironsrh tho most densely populated part of London, and there w;w much disorder. All the romls entering Loudon ran excursion trains, ami there were iu addition neveral hundred Salv.v tionists from tho continent; tho flag's of many nations and various societies were displayed in tlio procession, tho Ameri-can "Stars mid Stripes" being most con-spicuous; whilo a very groat uuiiilr of bands, of every possible kind, played every possible sort of airs, the different sections sininj;, or r uber shouting, !1 sorts of gongs, from the sublime to the ridiculous. Tha whimsical appearance of noma of t the Salvationists excited the ridicule of the crowd, and tho police nt last found it impossible to preserve order. In clear-ing a way for tho procession several per-sons were knocked down and badly hurt, uml nt the close, between tho wild enthusiasm of tin Salvationists and the disgraceful acts of the mob, the whole affair degenerated into something very like tt riot. Oen. Booth officiated at tho prove, where tolerably good order was maintained. cW Dr. John Farnhara Boynton, who died recently at Syracuse, N. V.; was nt one timo a noted geologist, and Was the in-ventor of tho so called "Bubcock Are extiuguiJier" as well as of many other machines. He took out during his lifo thirty patents, of which every or.o proved a success. Ilo was also the first to point out tho fraud in tho bo called 'Cardiff Giant," and was tho reporting physician during Dr. Tanner's fast. Iu various other ways lie was well known j to men of science. ' Dr. Boynton was born at Bradford, Mass., Sept. 20, 1811; graduated from a St. Louis medical school, practiced a whilo in tho west and then traveled through every state in tho Union lectur- - ing on "Geology nnd tho Natural Histo-- 1 ry of Creat ion." Agassis was so pleased with theso lectures that he formed close friendship with the doctor. Dr. Boynton went to California during tho "gold fever," and invented a process of extracting gold from ore. He had ' been out rowing, hundling the oars with the vigor of youth, and while on a long . walk soon after was surprised by a sud-den storm and thoroughly drenched. He begun hie literary career as a of the extreme school which i was dominant from 1830 to 18.10 or later h tho school which prevailed when he I reached roanhood. Born in Paris in 1809 he pro-duced his first work, "Sons les Tillenls," hereinl830. Soon after he became a regular contributor to Figaro. His "Voyage Around My Garden" be-w-quite popular both in England and merioa, and the satirical monthly Les jluepes, which he founded in 1831), was kot only popular, but had much to do kith abolishing imprisonment for debt and other ancient abuses. He ridiculed tl miS. Mrs. Catherine Booth, wife of Gen. Booth, of the Salvation Army, who died a few days since, and whose funeral cere-monies in London attracted so much at-i tention, was a woman of remarkable force of character, and had a career sin-gularly like those of many sainted wom-en in the early days of Christianity. A Curious Ceremouy Follows the "Pol-lution by lllood" of the Kdiilce. St. Paul's cathedral in Loudon was on a recent Sunday (tho day sacred in the English calendar to Edward tho Con-fessor) the scene of a very curious cere-mony, ono unknown in the United States thus ar, and bo long in disuse in England that many well informed per-sons were surprised to loarn that it was canonical. It was tho ceremony known as "reconciliation," being a sort of second dedication toclear the sacred edi-fice of the "pollution of blood." The cause was tlio suicide of Edward Easton, who recently shot himself in the cathedral while under temporary aberration of mind. In the old times of civil broil and intestinal war it often hap-pened that men were slain in a church, and in this case it was thought well to employ tho old form of "reconciliation." Tho bishop of London was the only person who could pronounce the "sen- - mm Reading the decree. Address of the bishop. THIS KECOXCILIATION SKKVICK. tence of reconciliation," and the cere-monies followed the afternoon 4 o'clock even-son- By a curious coincidence the sixty-nint- h Psalm, tho first for the day, waa appropriate to the ceremony. The "act of reparation to Almighty God for the dishonor to his sanctuary" be-gan with tho anthem, "Hear, O Lord, aud havo mercy, for thou art merciful." Tho bishop then recited the facts of tho suicide and consequent pollution, and gave the ancient form which states that though "all present are guiltless of the man's blood, yet all are alike partakers of the general sin he inherited." Mr. Lee, clerk, then read the old for-mal petition in tho quaint phraseology of canon law. The bishop advanced to the altar, which was lighted by tapers iu the ancient form, and kneeled while tho litany was intoned. Tho "Miserere" was then sung, after wliich the bishop recitod the sen-tences in the commination service, choir and congregation joining in the re-sponses. The collect for the same office was read, the prayer and confession re-cited by the bishop, and the clerk then read the sentence of reconciliation, be-ginning "In the name of God, amen," and ending thus: "Therefore we, Frederic, by the grace of God bishop of this diocese, dttcree and declare that this cathedral be exempt from every canonical impediment." The scroll containing the "reconciliation" was then signed by the bishop, and pray-er and a blessing ended tho strange cere-monial. , Icrms for "Man" and "Woman" In Society There exists much confusion iu people's minds as to the proper application of the tonus lady or gentleman. It is in very bad taste for a lady to talk about "a n friend," or for a gentleman to speak of "a lady friend." lie should men-tion her as "Mrs." or "Miss and she should simply speak ot him as ".Mr. lilank." In fashionable circles a pirl says, "I am ftoinfrto dance or dine with a man." A man, however, would not announce his in-tention of dininj tit a woman's, but at a holy's house. When to discriminate as to the proper uses of tho words lady or gen-tleman is the outcome of association with well bred persons, as no ironclad rules can be laid down upon this subject. A word which makes a cold shiver run down the spinal column of a cultured per-son is "Knteel," which should never be applied to any one in a position above that of a menial. It niiht be quite proper to speak of a genteel looking nuiid servant or butler, but no well breitVor refined person would express himself in these terms in spwikinRof an equal.
