Show Affairs in the new republic of Brazil, Bra-zil, if recent, reports arc correct, arc not iu as satisfactory a condition as the friends of republican institutions would like to see them. A great mistake has been made by President Fonsecaiu curtailing tho liberty of tho press. When the new government was organized, organ-ized, freedom of the press and of speech was guaranteed. The retrogressive action of tho government is causing great discontent and adverse comment among the people. It is to be hoped, however, that the trials and difficulties naturally incident to a revolution from monarchy to republicanism whl soon be overcome, and that the new republic will soon be on a.solid and permanent foundation. . |
