The gentleman walked into the business office, accompanied by his dog, and purchased an additional paper to mail to a relative in Illinois. The paper was wrapped np, and after placing a stamp on the wrapper and ad-dressing: it the gentleman gave the paper to the dog. The owner got into his buggy and drove to the postofflce, the dog running alongside the horse. At the iwstoffice the gentleman stopped, but the dog didn't. He mounted the steps, trotted down the corridor to the receiving boxes, and, taking hold of one end of the paper in his teeth, he inserted the other in the opening into the paper box,.and with his nose pushed it through the hole. He had no hesitancy about brushing his wet coat up against the light check trousers of several young men standing near the box, and when one of them wanted to help him to push the paper through the opening ho growled, as inuchantoay he knew his business and could get along without outside assistance. After depositing the paper in the box the dog bounded out again to his master, who was waiting for him. "It took me two weeks to train him to do that trick, but it paid me for the trouble," said the gentleman. Pittsburg Dispatch. makmiaL'k tun. Hisvissos, ) Per resolution of City Couucll. June IT, IVt. Immigrants and Cashiers. People who do business with newly ar rived immigrants notice how quickly .they begin to become Americanized. This tendency, in fact, causes no little inconvenience to the cashiers of savings banks, which have many immigrants among their depositors. Some of the larger institutions of this kind hav many hundreds of depositors, and it is necessary to exercise the greatest care in seeing that the signatures on orders or checks for money are exactly the same as the one which is kept on refer-ence. A Hungarian, for instance, when he opens his account, will sign his name "Josef." In a short while he finds trou-ble in withdrawing any money because he has changed his name to "Joseph." Heinrich, in the same way, becomes Henry; Pierre, Peter; Dorathea, Dora, and so on, The paying teller gets no rest until he has the signature which is kept on record Americanized. New York Tribune. Vitarsl Inequality of Men. mi men are certainly not born free djual in natural qualities; when they born the predicates "free" and ual" in the political sense are not ap-- abie to them, and as they develop, by year, the differences in the with which they really torn become more and more obvious-onterte- d into actual differences the liitlity of political faculty shows a necessary consequence of the tudity of natural faculty. , it probably true that the earliest men e nomads. But among a body of ?d, wandering savages, though there be no verbally recognized distinc-- of rank or office, superior strength cunning confer authority Of a more i kind than that secured by act of iwent; there may be no property in 3, but the witless man will be pov-strick-in ideas, the clever man be a capitalist in that same com-iit- y, which in the long run buys all rcomoiodities; one will miss oppor-iie- t, the others will make them; and isim human equality as loudly as like, Witless will serve his brother, ong an men are men and society is tij, human equality will be a dream; the assumption that it does exist is rain fact as it sets the mark of racticability on every theory of what tit to be which starts from Huxley in Popular Science. Aajs How to Plant Seeds. Starting seeds in boxes in the house ii not always a success, but I find there is a method of doing so that will meet the approbation of those troubled with seeds long in germinating and damping off. 1 heat soap stones quite hot twice a day and place them under the boxes. Bricks or flat stones will do. The seeds, under this treatment, spring np quite as quick-ly as in a hotbed, and seem to do as fine-ly. The seeds that I sowed, covering only with sand, never allowing it to dry, came up sooner than where sod was used. It is admirable for pansy seed, as it takes the place of moss as a shade. I never succeeded before in starting them earlier than ten days, and often fifteen, after sowing. A shallow box, about two inches deep, one foot long and six inches wide, is useM for starting all kinds of seeds and easily handled, and can be placed opon the reservoir at night, which is bet-ter than a stone, as it will retain heat until nearly morning. Turning a box over it on a cold night is an improvement --Vick's. In the sanguinary wars of the Turks in Hungary, Count Ludovio Lodrom, cn the eve of a battlo, harangued his sol-iie- rs in the true martial strain. "That is all very well," said a German veteran, stepping out in front of the ranks. "That is all very well for you who are mounted on a swift horse, and are already think-ing of saving younself. But for us" Whereupon Ludovlc immediately dis-mounted, drew his sword and ham-stringed the unimal. Then he exclaimed: "Today, then, comrades, you shall see me as captain and soldier fighting on foot by your aide and on the same terms." He was so severely wounded in the fight that the Turks, who took him prisoner, put him to death and sent his head to Constantinople, believing his recovery impossible and that they could never carry him there alive. During the cold weather in the winter the hens quit laying, but everybody wants to eat eggs. Conse-quently they go so high that the grocers caa't keep pace with their customers. In the spring, just as soon as eggs get plen-tiful, people quit eating them, and we have to sell them to packers, who pickle them for consumption later on.
