Show To Elevate Greek Women. A very interesting petition has recently recent-ly been submitted by the women of Greece to the government asking that better educational opportunities be given to the girls, and some attempt be made toward the elevation of women. It seems that during the quarter of a century comprising the present king's reign schools and gymnasia for boys have been founded, naval and military academies acad-emies been opened free of charge, and opportunities arranged by which the son of the artisan and shepherd, born of ignorant ig-norant peasant parents, may yet become statesmen, diplomates, soldiers and merchants. mer-chants. The burden of the petition, which has 2,830 signatures, is that there may be founded law lyceums, a practical prac-tical and fine arts school, where poor girls may have crafts and professions suitable for women, whereby they may gain a livelihood and secure for themselves them-selves respectable and independent support. sup-port. The interest in this appeal centers cen-ters in the fact that it is the first petition peti-tion of the kind ever made by Grecian women to the ministers of state. Exchange. |
