Reports Re-ports have been current for .some time that some white men claiming to be from the north and styling themselves missionary preachers were in the parish living with the colored people on terms of social equality. They advised the colored people not to work for less thau $1 per too, and to allow the cotton to rot rather than to work for less. Tho planters refused to aeeeed, and in consequence con-sequence promising lields of a few w eeks ago, through' lack of labor aud surplus sur-plus of raiu, have turned grassy. The preachers came to Amity and have boen pursuing the. same course, holding night meetings in colored churches with armed guards at the door. A committee of young white men was appointed ap-pointed to wait on tho preachers and peaceably urge them to stop interfering with the colored labor. Thoconimitteo visited the colored minister, where tho white preachers were stopping, ami while conversing with him a number of double-barreled shotguns loaded with buckshot were tired at them by negroes. Four of tho committeo were wounded. The preachers have since left town. |
