Show lSclonged to the Hand. Some amusing stories relative to the effect of the recent court martials and investigations are going about in army circles, and one of them comes from Jefferson Jef-ferson barracks, Missouri. An investigation investi-gation was held at the barracks last year as a result of the talk about desertions deser-tions in the army, aud ever since the investigation in-vestigation the officers at the barracks have been extremely careful in their treatment of enlisted men. The Steel-Wild Steel-Wild court martial of recent notoriety has increased the delicacy of their places, so when a member of the military band at the barracks came to the post surgeon with a long face and a plaintive story about a sore throat he was treated with a consideration which was as marked as It was gratifying. "Sore throat, eh?" said the surgeon pleasantly. "Let me see. Oh, that's not so bad. A slight irritation, nothing more. You'll be all right in a day or two. I guess you would better take no chances of renewing the trouble by using your throat, though, so I will recommend recom-mend that you be excused from active duty for two weeks." Armed with the surgeon's certificate the bandsman obtained his two weeks' relief from active duty. The two weeks ! had just come to an end when he met the post surgeon on tho parade- ground. The bandsman 6aluted. The surgeon recognized the face and stopped. "How's the throat?" he said pleasantly. "It's quite well, sir," was the reply. "That's good," said tho surgeon. " Yoq can get back to your duty uow without fear. By the way, what instrument do you handle in the band?" "The small drum, sir," said the musician. musi-cian. New York Tribune. |
