Show When Senator Stanford Wal Poor. Leland Stanford once told me that he made $13 the first year that he practiced law in Wisconsin. He bad one of the finest law libraries in the northwest and was doing well, when a fire broke out and ate up this and the thirteen mortgages mort-gages which then contained the bulk of his accumulations. The result was that he was reduced to $800, and rather than rebuild he decided to go to California. He there became involved in business and railroads, and instead of being a rich Wisconsin lawyer he has become the hundred millionaire United States senator, sen-ator, Washington Letter. |
