lost spring Is tho the commander of the second battalion but the commanding officer of 0 the thard third battalion Is yet n Se several verall new officers have been lately assigned to the regiment but it Is not known yet to what companes information has been received at the post or at least turner rumor lies has it that mal gen J ford kent lt S V find and colonel of the twenty fourth infantry has been retired with the rank bof 0 url abter cenami U S A having been promoted to that bri brigade gride upon ithe the retirement of one of tho the brigadier generals this report has han not been authenticated it if however it Is authenticated the regiment will in all likelihood have uen can E 11 lle litt cum U S V and present lieu tenant colonel of the regiment for or their colonel owing to the existing unsettled state stale of affairs 0 of f the war department nothing unless s ordered can be surmised now that the twenty fourth infantry Is on its way home returning to the lh people alio to ore are so proud of their achievements on the battlefield it seema learn only right and proper that something should bo be said in behalf of that regiment and its discipline while in 11 abo to south when the twenty ty fourth infantry came to fort douglas it came etli on an unblemished record for discipline its tour of a year and a hairs duty here her before the war was not marred by one single incident to change its status for discipline and it left here her as it came one of the best if not the best disciplined regiment on athe the field aside from the good deportment of the regiment regimen it and its status of marksmanship mark manship it had bad little to boast of av a it had never had a chance to distinguish tIng itself in battle but it returns I 1 IL a gai lamit and heroic regiment willil Us it a record for good behavior untarnished in caso case some of tho the journals published u in tho south uth all of which are affected with yellow journalism so far as the th a colored soldier Is concerned have ha a found their way this far north orvin or in case some one now here atio ho was living lilt IM the south at the time and read the nial malicious lelous lies published in the chattanooga times atlanta constitution ution the times union or citizen of jacksonville and the three dirty ailt tie sheets published at tampa concerning the twenty fourth infantry anti and may have become paju prejudiced dicea diced toward themon them account of the many depredations charged to them by these malicious and prejudiced journals it ft Is no more than right that the conduct of this regiment should be published publish 1 d as it was and not as ua its enemies aou would have it the conduct of the twenty fourth infantry on tho the road on pass or in the camp WILS was highly commendable tile the regiment was designated by others ollie ra as the sunday school troys eye for or often 0 ahen m lien they were asked to go on some u unlawful or mischievous errand t wnm they eyon would bould find some excuse for not going they seemed t to 0 be rather proud of being called sunday S u school boys willie while it Is true that quite a number of colored soldiers were mere arrested ori ari r a sted vi litile in the south the police I 1 ourt court c records cannot show an arrest of f it member of the twenty fourth infantry it they find a record of arrest I 1 defy them to
