Show IT is ia to be hoped that congress will pass the bill creating a department of mines the secretary of which shall be appointed by the president the same as the other officials of his cabinet are appointed if this proposed department part ment is established the geological survey with its records maps and apparatus will come within its authority and direction and be made a part of it in addition to which the department will pay the same attention to mining that the secretary of the interior does doe a to agricultural a 0 1 rl Cultural matters another measure now pending is the bill which provides for the establishment of experimental stations in each mining state the scope of which will be similar to the t government overn ment agricultural stations such as the college at logan connected with these mining stations will be a government geologist 11 for each state at a salary of a year and in addition an assayer will be appointed for each station at a salary of 2500 the department of mining should and would be a great benefit to the mining industry of this western country while the establishment of experimental stai stations ions in each of the mining 11 states would be a great help and assistance in the exploration and development of mining properties the mining alining review is heartily in favor of both measures |
