fortune to visit the the old bay state mines in chihuahua canyon have been worked since the early seventies and they are famed as wealth producers from san francisco to the old bay state we often hear of mines that have their millions of which no records are obtainable but up to the time that the bay state property passed into the A hands of its present owners it had a re corded production of about in silver alone and at an expense of only no account having been taken of the ore were shipped to outside markets at the mill the old time process of pan settling was employed the extraction being in the neighborhood of 70 to 80 per cent of the silver values below the mill there is a tailings dump of about or tons that contains average values of 16 ounces silver and one per cent copper to the ton which can be successfully and profitably handled in the remodeled mill now in operation much of the bay state ore milled in former days averaged about 8 per cent lead 5 per cent copper and 80 ounces in silver to the ton this from the chihuahua vein while from the blanket vein on the property the milling ore would run from 15 to 20 per cent lead and 40 ounces in silver in I 1 the he t year ye ar 1 1902 the bay state mine passed into the hands of C M perry of boston and who later on organized the newark mining milling company which is now engaged in the operation and development of this splendid property the chihuahua vein is a true fissure in lime the for formation maIon shows signs of profound volcanic action which tilted the bedding planes sharply to the north the fissuring is at right angles to the shearing planes and the ge general strike of the vein is northerly and southerly the deep can tons of ore blocked out t that hat will average at af least 40 to the ton this does not include the ore showing in the silver lead vein or blanket deposit estimated at about 2500 tons and which will average 8 per cent lead and 35 ounces in silver to the ton on the dumps at the mine there are at least tons of ore which at a conservative estimate will go t to 0 30 to the ton in its metallic contents in the development of the bay state sta superintendent perin wm H Wain who has virtually been in charge of the proper property fy for the past twenty years is pushing ahead in the main or lower tunnel on the north side aide of the canyon in addition he is raising on the ore from this deposition is the existence of lead carbonates and chlorides in the bedded planes of the limestone these deposits lie almost horizontal and have been productive of much good ore in the past while a large tonnage is now in sight ready for extraction and the mill the mine workings at the present time consist of a foot double compartment shaft and about feet of tunnels and drifts most of the ore extracted was taken from above the foot level while in the mine workings according to an estimate made by manager perry there are about blocked out in several portions of the mine and no extraction is being done excepting when connected with development work of ore so broken down during the past two years the company has marketed a product that has brought it leaving the low grade ore on the dump
