Show SKY LINE bingham press one of the features of construction work in bingham at the present time is the sky line railroad of the boston con which is being rapidly brought to completion the road runs from the works in carr fork around the hill into the main canyon and is to be r used solely for steam shovel work the properties of the company referred to cover I 1 an extensive tract including the top of the hill which separates carr fork from the main canyon and the ore body is found here but ut a few feet from the surface it is the plan alan of the company then to operate three steam keam shovels on this tract first scooping the surface dirt and finally removing the I 1 rocky formation which covers the ore body proper thus an immense saving in labor and time can be effected and sufficient ore b to meet the requirements of the companas comp anys ton mill will be uncovered the railroad itself is constructed in three legs two of which are to be used merely to mount the s steep beep grade to the third leg or line proper from the junction of these two portions the road runs east on the south side of carr fork a distance of a mile to the bog back separating the two canyons here the grade changes from the 7 per cent which it has maintained thus far to 2 per cent the latter degree of ascent is maintained to the end of the line in main canyon the steam shovels are to be used on the portion of the road just described they are to be started upon the main canyon end of the road and will ship their dirt on a narrow guage made by means of a third rail back to ingersoll gulch it is expected that the latter will be filled within two years and this indeed is not improbable when it is taken into consideration that the boston con properties are of such an extent that there is literally the surface of a small mountain to be removed the shovels purchased for this work have a high capacity one is on the ground at present having a working average of 1600 cubic yards per day of ten hours it works in a radius of 30 feet has a horse power ct 75 and picks up three cubic yards every dipper full this shovel is listed at with two more machines also of large capacity on the road the equipment in this line is seen to be very efficient As to the roadbed itself it may be said at least that it is an unique piece of en engineering the entire line is cut out of the bill hillside side and is run for half its length at an exceedingly steep grade there are five cuts on the line varying in length from to feet and having an average depth of en bards yards several fills switches and so many curves that there are practically no tangents on the entire road and perhaps the most noteworthy feature of the whole project from an engineering standpoint is the one trestle which crosses ingersoll gulch it is feet long and is built on a 71 per cent grade and a 40 per cent curve work on this line was started on march 1 and though difficulties have bene encountered an average of 50 men per day for the last three months is rapidly bringing the end in sight nearly feet of track are laid at present and the remainder is being put down at the rate of feet a day |
