Show EUREKA HAS A HISTORY EDITORIAL correspondence I 1 at one time in its history eureka nevada da ruled the lead market of the world at that time eureka was a lively aggressive and prosperous camp of about inhabitants stants and from ten to thirty mines were working on ruby hill on adams hill and at prospect point to handle the heavy output continuous line of business houses these were solid and substantial structures of brick and hewn stone many of which had iron fronts while on the side streets and on low lying hills in the suburbs of the camp as it were there were hundreds of tasty band and pretty cottages and residences fe churches school houses and places of amusement A fine water system gave a metropolitan aspect to the place and a number of secret societies had their orders there then too as now the eureka palisade railroad connected the camp with the outside read and mail and telegraph facilities were all that could be desired then also the camp boasted of several newspapers while now it has but one which however is creditable alike to its publisher and to the town if in the palmy days of the camp one chanced to lie die despite tho the healthy and salubrious lub rious climate of r ureka eureka which was not otten often unless in cases of mine accidents by the pistol route there was no lack of burial facilities as there aro are nine cemeteries in the camp these came into existence because of the number of secret societies then flourishing the different diff brent churches were particular where they buried their dead and even the potters field was not overlooked over looked in eureka everty hing that died was decently buried with the exception of the camp itself the of silver in 1903 was practically a death blow to the camp for years physicians pronounced that its expiring breath had been recorded and insisted that the dead should bury the dead so low indeed has the pulse of the ik 07 at county court house eureka of which six smelling smelting sm elting g plants were in full blast at that time which was less than thirty years ago the business transactions at eureka were something enormous up and down the he canyon for nearly a mile there was one ond camp been for many years that strong alm stimulants were necessary to bring out any sign of any remaining vitality these stimulants being in the form of increased prices being paid for silver states company of salt lake and the merging of these old time producers into an auxiliary company incorporated under the title of the richmond eureka mining company the transfer of these mines to outside people the rebuilding building re of the stub line from the depot to ruby hill where these properties are located and the re equipment of the power plant on the hill together with the employment of a large number of men has given the old camp a new lease on life and every me merchant every business man every man having promising holdings in the district now looks forward with hopeful eyes to the future of tile the camp the richmond eureka the richmond eureka mining company owns acres on tuby ruby hill besides smelter and tunnel sites and water rights both the eureka con and the richmond have a i recorded production of about thirty five million each and each have disbursed about five millions in dividends at the locan shaft of the richmond eu reka a lar large lare t e am amount aunt of machinery is being installed instilled included in which there are four boilers of horsepower each a nordberg air compressor of 1500 cubic feet per minute a 22 6 nordberg double reel duplex hoisting engine of 2200 feet capacity and a well equipped machine shop in the mine there are two prescott compound triple ex mansion pa aslon steam pumps which will handle gallons 1 allons of gf water a minute from a depth of 1350 feet at the lawton shaft ore bins have been constructed having a capacity of tons and at the present time it is believed that the company is outputting tons of ore daily which tonnage will doubtless soon be increased to tons the richmond eureka is in charge of general superintendent A P mayberry hon C E allen alien is superintendent and H C Me Terney for years with the old eureka con and richmond companies as superintendent in the diamond and excelsior no one excepting those who should know and who have access to the books of the company can tell what has been the production of the diamond and excelsior mines among the oldest in the camp the immense dump at the mine should indicate a splendid tonnage and old time Eure kans tell of great chimneys in the mine workings from several of which fortunes have been taken the diamond and excelsior is located on prospect mountain four miles southwest of eureka charles read of salt lake is manager and edward berryman who has been in the camp almost since its infancy and who draws the ribbons over one of the finest teams in the camp is the superintendent su of this splendid property it is quite probable that the diamond and excelsior has produced in excess of four millions it is i now a regular shipper of a fair grade of ore and is giving employment to a force of from twenty to thirty men the property is equipped with a fine power house and utilizes two machine drills op orations erat ions are chiefly through a main m ain tunnel from which dinzes are sunk to diff different erent levels at the present time the mine is reported to be looking exceptionally well the mines of mhd camp there are over a hundred mines in the camp which have been wonderfully productive in the past pact and which are still good of these the richmond eureka the diamond and excelsior and the jackson con are still on the shipping list while there are hundreds of claims with but shallow workings that have been productive of much rich ore that hold out splendid promise for the future and many of these are owned by eureka people who would willingly give the right people an interest in the same on easy terms according to the statisticians of the ca camp mp the production of eureka mines and published by the eureka sentinel is as follows the net value only Is given in the table but it is claimed that merchandise and miners supplies mr dixs family has just arrived from the east and is more f comfortably domiciled in the camp eureka boasts of the finest county court house to be found in nevada it is a commodious two story structure built of brick and Js is the pride of every loyal citizen As eureka is a most healthy place not withstanding its many cemeteries it boasts well known firm of remington and johnson he is an old timer here and is the chief owner of the famous silver connor mine C of but one physician dr W P F burnet a capable and popular practitioner who is county physician as well and who has charge of the county hospital eureka has but one place of entertainment for the traveler the brown hotel of which E L tipple tippie is the popular proprietor the brown hotel is far above the average faor for a mining camp and comes nearer being r modern than is usually the case in hostelry L C in the west the cusine is good and here cold and hot baths are provided for the vengence veni ence of guests it is needless to say that the house is well patronized the fletcher bros own the only livery stable in camp and good rigs and saddle horses are furnished its patrons the firm r has just added a fine new hack to its equip ment and with it meets all trains the eureka sentinel published by E A f skillman is a bright and newsy paper and is a credit to the camp it is on the side of legitimate ate progress and its news columns aare A are interesting and reliable 4 J B biale is one of the enterprising 1 merchants of the camp and his well stocked store astore is well patronized
