Show THE MINES NEAR farmington WRITTEN POR FOR THE MINING REVIEW when one speaks of the mines near farmington the apparent incongruity iacong aulty of the expression partially paralyzes promoters and although claiming to hall hail from missouri they refuse to go where they can be shown nevertheless it is within the bounds of possibility that at no distant day this neglected district will almost if not quite rival the great bingham as a producer of copper and gold in the hills just east of farmington seventeen miles north of salt lake there are innumerable ledges varying in width from a few inches to twelve feet and all carrying from 3 to 20 per cent copper in fact as says have never failed to show at least 3 per cent the copper showing in the borm of a pyrite and is therefore easily concentrated and the nearness of transportation facilities would enable most of the mines of the district to be worked at a moderate expense A brief description of some of the properties on this locality recently visited by the writer that are now being developed will give but a partial idea of the of the district but may be the means of attracting tr merited attention to this promising locality the first prospect inspected was the onita claim of the col foote group on mud creek some four miles up farmington canyon where two men have been at work all winter and where two shifts are now employed in driving a tunnel in on the ledge in the face of the tunnel there is about four feet of quartz showing that is partially decomposed and highly mineralized from a streak on the from one half to four inches in width a sample was t that assayed in gold silver and 4 per cent I 1 opper copper to alie ounces the ledge strikes almost eat east and to vest a slight dip to the north 0 i i LU anu and nd an ainoo appears rs be in place with well defined waln walls to of ite and gneiss where the ledge arz was trat opened it was considerably broken up th several stringers of white and rose e q onra sprinkled with black iron and copper rite were separated by stratas of waste 11 PT dy aerial in the face of the workings g feet from the tunnel mouth quartz stratas appear to come together aid J the waste matter has entirely disappear one sample taken haphazard from the f fa ace of the tunnel and which was tested by fe union assay office of salt lake carried del gold one half ounce silver 1 per centle cent leal adl 5 per cent sulphur 15 per cent ron add I 1 per cent copper from the character of tie 51 formation and judging fro from in the made it is believed that when greater cepl has been attained copper will pred and other values reduced this vein loc ly known as the col foote ledge cank caa in easily traced from the onita claim for fog fo miles east and crops out at frequent fat vals along this distance there are num nuin ous claims located along this ledge but of lug ing to the poverty of the locators but littfe work has been done and that little in ini I 1 very unscientific manner about two miles east of the foote arcu and on the opposite side of the canyon tt the south is located the southworth Southwort hC sli dated property on which considerate work has been done A foot tunnel la 4 been driven in on this group from the f fid g of which a has been sunk to a de denti of twenty five feet while the tunnel 1 been run on ore all the way which is large larg n a decomposed iron the greater values W w g fo found und in the bottom of the where was taken that assayed 11 gold I 1 8 88 bunc silver and 7 per cent in copper own the dip of the vein this pay streak I 1 lost in the bottom of the and in n or ori to tap it at greater depth a new tunnel 1 been started further down the hill whick wh is calculated will cut the ledge at a 1 depth of feet below the bot of the the tunnel is expected reach the objective point early h there are several parallel ledges on t property but as no work has ha I 1 be been d y on them their extent and value are P py unknown ar 11 0 further down the canyon and same side is the little gem group groult I 1 the only known galena ore in the dis ls is found this ore assays essays 40 per cent 41 ounces silver and 11 in gold to the some work has been done on this P v but not enough to prove the extent of sev s deposit in this ledge there are stringers of galena varying from ose inches in width and separated by male ale talc and lime there is also an oc dional appearance of rock A rca of four men will be employed at the atle gem all summer and something may doing in the fall further down the canyon about a mile in the little gem major derby of farm ton eton has several apparently choice claims which there are from one to three ledges the same general character as the col I 1 ote jote veins in the foothills foot hills just east of the town it 1 located the patsy marley group from 0 ilch aich ore carrying sensational values has ten en taken at the present time no work being done in the development of this bound just to the south of this property ld id down the hill is the where a lall concentrating concen brating plant is being installed handle the ores from this mine the A amin ore deposits are evidently extensive it of rather low grade ain in stead canyon the Fai farmington mining mcany has a group of claims on which considerable work has been done and w with ith gratifying results the suspension of work here is probably only temporary as it is believed that th the e company is preparing plans for a campaign of more extensive development to the south of stead canyon a new discovery has bene made of late it is evidently a blowout blow out from some blind ledge where the surface dirt has vene bene scraped off there appears to be about ten feet of mineral matter composed of decomposed iron and carbonates bo nates A small sample taken from this new discovery assayed 42 gold 2 ounces silver 6 per cent copper and 17 per cent iron the above would seem to indicate that there is an ore body of considerable magnitude and value in these hills only waiting proper development the writer believes that some day a mine will be made in this section and that as it is so near to salt lake city it would pay local mining men to investigate into the merits of this locality E A GREGORY |
