Show ACTIVITY IN GOLD HILL DISTRICT SPECIAL correspondence grants pass ore april 25 B E W walter of colorado springs has taken charge of the takilma smelter of the waldo copper district and is shaping things for the beginning of the seasons business mr walter expects to have the plant ready for blowing in by the of may C J murphy the former manager of the copper mines of the takilma smelting smelling Sm elting company has resigned and E W mccormack of colorado has succeeded him the smelter will have a much longer and better run this summer than for any past season there is a bigger and richer body of ore for treatment and the capacity of the plant has been enlarged since it seems an absolute certainty that the california oregon coast railroad will be built from grants pass to waldo this summer the smelter management has decided to increase the capacity of the plant from to tons daily all this past winter development has been under way on both the properties of the waldo smelting smelling Sm elting mining company and of the takilma smelting smelling Sm elting company these groups of mines and claims are located near the smelter and the best developed is the cowboy owned by the waldo company and the queen of bronze owned by the takilma company in the queen of bronze alone enough ore has been blocked out to keep the smelter busy all of this season the takilma smelting smelling Sm elting company owns and operates its own sawmill on its claims the mill has been operated for some time past cutting lumber bior for the erection of new buildings on the mines and also for the construction of a foot tramway that will connect the queen of bronze with the smelter ore bins A tram will also be constructed ted from the cawby mine to the smelter the lucky bart group consisting of acres of mineral land was recently bonded by an eastern company for a consideration of the deal was made through W W kirk of gold hill J H beeman of gold hill being the former owner the lucky bart is one jone of the oldest and best developed of gold hills properties it has been a regular shipper for some time and has surrendered a quantity of rich ore besides that treated on the mine much of the lucky barts ore has milled as high as 80 a ton the people who have the mine under bond will begin development at once 9 the sale of the old eureka mine on soldier creek was confirmed this week the property was bought from the eureka mining company of eureka cal by pittsburg capitalists the sale was engineered by C L mangum president of the grants pass miners association and is one of the big gest deals ever made in southern oregon mines the first payment of was made this week through the first national bank of grants pass and the new owners have taken possession and will begin work at once the consideration is not yet given out but it is known to be up in six figures the eureka is developed to a depth of feet and has over worth of splendid ore blocked out it its is equipped with ten stamp mill concentrating plant hoist compressor machine drills and electric lighting plant the new management will place 40 or 50 stamps and operate the property on a gigantic scale there is greater activity in gold hill district this season than that old camp has known since the early days gold cold hill is the largest mining district in southern oregon covering all of northern jackson coun ty and extending to within a few miles gnp of grants pass in josephine there 3 are un der development and being operated in this thi district the tin pan lucky bart corporal G hinkle gray eagle drummond shook white horse tolo gold hill conger gold standard red oak bill nye and braden many of these properties are equipped with mills and have been producing for some time others are shipping ore and still others are just reaching the border line between a prospect and a producer ten additional stamps are being placed in the opp mine and will be ready for work within a short time many improvements have been made on this property since it was taken over a few months ago by the opp mining company A seven foot ledge has been struck on an foot crosscut under the old workings of the mine the he tramway from martha mine to the greenback mill is now in operation and Is 13 giving excellent satisfaction it is six long and carries twenty buckets each or 1000 pounds capacity DENNIS H STOVALL |
