Show THE BURRO TO THE prospector 5 ik 4 h A it tal ore 1 I say pard said the burro to the prospector your mouth has been going so regularly during the past year that I 1 had a chance to say a word suppose for a change that I 1 give you a little back talk here is a fragment that I 1 found while striving to derive a little nourishment from a bunch of old newspapers among them being a sample copy of the white pine news it speaks for me better than I 1 can express my own opinions with my jerky but melodious voice the news says the long haired long eared meek look lug ing little burro is a very useful animal he has acted an important part in building the world from the days of adam to the present time and still carries his load uncomplainingly he was first employed in this state in packing all kinds of provisions across the sierra nevadas to the comstock in the days of the trail he was crowded out by the building of the highways on the old placerville strawberry valley route and off the hennessy pass that shortly after their completion were lined with big schoon ers with their back actions and drawn by strings of horses and mules but in going from the paths where he had formerly been employed to a place further out on the frontier of civilization the little fellow has had as much to do with the development of mining property as has man or capital he has drudged dredged over nevadas hills loaded with the necessities of man living on the smell of the sage brush ever since fremont found a path to the pacific coast he has packed supplies into the sheep and cattle camps of the state for fol many many years and is still acting his part in helping man along the rugged path of life with his saddle securely strapped to his strong little back and loaded with a couple of hundred pounds of flour bacon yeast powder and a frying pan he carries the precious load into the inaccessible sections of our commonwealth his importance as a servant of man enan has been shamefully neglected as far as giving credit where credit is due for at best he is only a jackass and yet he has been the most useful animal for foi man of all the equine family the burro is worth his weight in gold and will continue to be to the end of time the burro has been a great factor in the leading copper camp of t the he world he was a pioneer in this county as he has been the world over |
