Show THE TAKILMA SMELTER special correspondence waldo oregon june 30 the takilma smelting smelling Sm elting company a subsidiary company to the united states refining reduction company of colorado Spir has renewed operations at its smelter near waldo with an entire change of management the new manager for the company is A H carpenter son of dr carpenter the well known metallurgist of deadwood south dakota the smelter superintendent is walter S keith of british columbia the ore supply for the plant is obtained principally from the queen of bronze mine which contains in value an average of 9 per pe cent copper 4 in gold and from two to three ounces in in silver the ore is a combined pyrite and in a serpentine gangue and lies in great kidneys between diorite and serpentine A limited amount of ore of much the same character is obtained from the lyttle and mabel mines the great drawback to mining and smelt ing in the district is the lack of transportation facilities the coke matte and supplies having to be hauled a distance of forty five miles to and from grants pass on the southern pacific railway this work requires head of stock the ore has also to be hauled from one to three miles requiring about forty head of stock this long haulage makes the treatment cost excessive ces sive but even with that the plant is a moneymaker money maker A large number of northern mining men have been through this district during the spring and it is highly probable that northern capital will soon become interested in southern oregon and northern california HENRY WHITE |
