Show COPPER MINES IN UINTAH COUNTY SPECIAL correspondence vernal utah march 10 perhaps in the state of utah a richer or better deposit of the red metal has never been discovered than the surface deposit of the dyer mine from this deposit or pocket measuring ninety feet across in the widest place by feet in length and fifty feet deep there has been been mined and smelted smelter copper ore to the value of and this too when the market price of copner product was much less than it is now this ore was all a high grade copper product running as high as 70 per cent with silver and gold associated to the value of 20 a ton in the early history of this mine the ore rl R 01 4 nw N AV w V open cut at dyer mine from which has been taken was hauled by wagon a distance of nearly miles to the railroad and thence by rail to the smelter even then it paid handsomely for the labor and expense incurred so far no effort his has ever been made to attain depth in the development of the dyer but all ali work has been done on the surface the only apparent object being to get all of the ore possible out of the mine with the smallest expenditure the result of this method being that the property is not good to look at but the experienced miner looks upon this mine as being a wonder and no doubt exists but that with proper management and intelligent operation it will develop into a splendid producer near the mine there is a fine smelting smelling sm elting plant where of late years rich carbonate copper ore was reduced the dyer was formerly owned by the summit copper company but has recently changed hands for the sum of a comparatively small amount considering the amount of its output in the past under the new management it is believed that the smelter will be sending out a steady stream of copper matte or bullion in the near future the old camp is now witnessing a revival of activity it having had little spurts of prosperity off and on since the year 1879 when considerable work was done on the lead deposits that lie just south of the dyer copper mine at the present time the colorado fuel iron company has a force of men employed on the great iron ledges about one mile southwest 0 of the AN ore bins and laboratory and office building at dyer mine dyer where the hematite iron is from twenty five to thirty feet thick this property was acquired by the C F I 1 people about the first of last december and it certainly looks as if the company meant business with the coming of spring there will be considerable stir in this part of the country the camp is known as carbonate mining district and if it was near a railroad there would be something doing as the whole country is heavily mineralized and rich ore is found in many places in the camp browns park further on northeast of the dyer camp is the camp of browns park where there thera are many promising mining claims all carrying good values in copper as well as a little gold considerable work has been done in this section but as yet no ore has been shipped out nor smelted smelt ed what is needed here is a good custom smelter for the treatment of local ores and in this camp such a plant would be a good thing for all concerned as there is plenty of ore in sight to keep a good sized plant in operation for several years red and willow creeks the writer is well acquainted with this camp and will state that all that is needed here to develop the great mineral deposits of what is known as the jessie ewing canyon mines is a little capital in red creek four miles west and in willow creek three miles east of jessie ewing canyon the veins and ledges can be traced as plainly as a traveled road the formation here is quartz in contact with schist and porphyry this last named camp is about fifty miles from rock springs in a southerly direction it is stated that a company has been formed to operate some of the best claims in this camp this coming summer the ore will be sorted and shipped and at the present price paid for copper will yield handsome returns the silver king the silver king mine near the dyer mine has about tons of silver lead ore on the dump and there is a splendid showing of this class and character of ore in the mine workings the outlook for this property is excellent ALTA |
