Show THE FOR NEW ELDORADO I correspondence grants pass ore july 10 the rush is still on to the new eldorado up in the sis kilous beyond holland south of this city and on the oregon california line I 1 took the fever and joined the caravan mainly for the purpose of satisfying a curiosity but not an idle one for it is too severe a strain on a scribblers scribble rs physical makeup make up to climb twenty miles almost straight up just to see what is going on over the divide it is forty miles to holland and this part of the journey was made over a good wagon road and in less than one day here we remained over night and at an early hour the following day was on the trail headed for the snow capped crags of the and the eldorado probably twenty men left holland the same day they were men from all sections some from arizona some from colorado some from alaska and even some from mexico it is twenty miles from holland to upper thompson creek the scene of the strike and as previously busly hinted a great part of this is straight up there are places and not such a few of them where the prospector is obliged to dig in his toes and scratch gravel furiously to stick to the trail the elevation of the at the new district is 2200 to feet it is quite deep in the shadows and canyons in winter there is from twenty seven to fifty feet of the beautiful so what prospecting is done must be done before fall we found about men scattered about the head of thompson and indian creeks a number of whom had already took up claims A townsite has been surveyed and the town if it comes to pass will be known as Golden view city from Golden view city one may look off and see naught but purple ranges and pine clad mineralized mountains miles in any direction this is so probably there is no greater no more vast and no more mineral field in all america than this if the rush continues probably 2000 men will enter the region during the summer and this will be as naught for what could an army of prospectors do to prospect such a demesne the strike made by briggs and his two boys the strike from which some have already been taken from a shallow hole but seven feet long and three feet deep and which is the primary cause of all the excitement is located at the head of thompson creek and just over over the siskiyou you divide it is but yards from the base of tenon peak and is on a very steep hillside the strike is directly on a contact of granite and porphyry and is but the rich pay shoot 0 of a well defined ledge this ledge has been traced along the hillside fop a dis tance of 2200 feet and will no doubt prove the bonanza of the district once it is opened up its hanging wall is porphyry and the foot wall granite nearly a dozen claims have been located directly on this contact and many others have been made on cross ledges and gulches the gulches being mainly placer several strikes have been made in the district aside from that of briggs and sons beers and cineel two miners who located out there have uncovered a ledge one mile from the briggs t property this ledge lies in a contact of slate and granite or porphyry and granite samples have been assayed that gave returns of from to a ton these samples were thickly shot with gold drake brothers have found a very promising tellurium vein and king and have found and are developing a rich ledge some three miles from the original discovery this ledge has a width of eight inches and none of the ore assayed or tested gave returns of less than a ton and much of it run as high as 1200 a ton there has been considerable dispute as to whether the strike is in oregon ar or california As a matter of fact the original discovery is so close to the line that one opinion is about as good as another but so far as benefits are concerned and to all practical ends the district is in oregon as the only means of entering it is from this side that many of the locations made are in california there is no doubt briggs and his boys have not done much work on their claim for several days having been busy in the running of a ditch from the head of thompson creek down to the diggings this ditch is now completed and sluices are being arranged into which the loose dirt and the decomposed stuff will be shoveled the dirt about the glory hole gives returns of from 25 cents to 10 a pan there will be enough on the surface to keep the owners busy all summer and they expect to realize at least from the proposition before they are driven out by the snows this next winter the last big chunk of pure gold taken out weighed over nine pounds and contained about 2500 the usual seekers for a lost cabin mine are in the new district this time it Is a stone reservoir that is being sought a reservoir that was used by two miners in operating a placer proposition at the head of thompson or indian creeks nearly fifty years ago the two men were killed by the red men and the cleanup clean up buried beneath a big oak there are men who believe if they can find the remains of that stone reservoir they can find the oak oakland and it if they pan can fiad fin d the oak they paig can also un cover the buried treasure but soni someway eway they cant find them DENNIS 11 1 1 STOVALL 0 |
