Show 1 MINING AFFAIRS IN SOUTHERN OREGON ORE GON JS correspondence 3 grants pass ore oct 25 the oro fino mining company is busily engaged installing stalling Z the 50 ton cyanide plant received some time ago from the parnell mine near kalama wash the plant was formerly used at the darnell but it proved to be the wrong plant for the character of ore produced by the property it is calculated to treat with perfection the cyanide ores of the oro fino the placer mines of the southern oregon districts are all being prepared for their usual winters work the galice consolidated will operate four or five giants this season and nd the royal group will operate three many other mines that have operated but one or two will have three or four in operation this season samples of high grade cinnabar carrying a good percentage in mercury have been brought in and placed on exhibition at the permanent mineral display in grants pass the ore is from a rich cinnabar prospect located on pickett creek and from a well defined contact vein between walls of shale and porphyry the proposition gives promise of considerable worth and will be adequately developed A recent strike on sucker creek was the uncovering of a fourteen foot ledge carrying average values of 5 a ton the strike was made by H C berry a southern oregon miner and prospector who put in the summer on oil sucker creek samples 0 of f ore from the strike have been brought in and are on display at the permanent minerals exhibit here the rock is of a rusty red color and its character is principally decomposed quartz making it very easy stuff to mine manager W J morphy after a mouths months visit at the granite hill mines the property of the american gold fields company returned to chicago this past week mr morphy had laid extensive plans for the development and equipment of these properties this coming season basing his calculations cu lations on the wonderful showing the mine is making the ledge has now widened out to twenty feet and the ore is richer and better on the lower levels than was found nearer the surface the williamsburg mining company is making good progress in the development of the bone of contention mine of williams district over feet of development work is done and a large body of ore is uncovered for the mill the mill was installed several years ago and was operated on surface values which finally gave out and the mine failed for a time for lack of deep development the portland company hopes soon to have a supply of ore uncovered sufficient to keep the mill in constant opera tion reliable report comes from the old greenback mine of grave creek that one one of the richest and best strikes yet made in that property has occurred on the 1200 foot level leel this level is worked work ed by drift on the vein feet below the lower adit tunnel and is by far the greatest depth attained by any southern oregon property the finding of the rich ore and the stability and firmness of the ledge at this depth is a positive indication that the greenback vein is far from pinched 0 out ut 11 wm H brevoort of new york president and general manager of the greenback mining company has been in this section of the state for some time making an inspection of both the companas comp anys property and other mines of the district the success of the greenback mine has led him to believe heartily in southern oregon the takilma a smelting smelling Sm elting company has practically shut down its plant for the winter on account of the inability of the mule team to keep the smelter supplied with coke it is a forty mile haul over a mountain road from grants pass to takilma Ta kilma and when the roads are dry and hard the problem of a coke supply is a difficult one now that winter and bad roads have arrived the management concludes it best to cease operations till spring but in the meantime the teams will be kept busy hauling out the matte that has accumulated and a large crew will be employed constantly in the copper mines of the waldo smelting smelling Sm elting mining company blocking out a good supply of ore probably by this time next year a railroad will be built between the smelter and this city the black butte quicksilver mining company a washington state corporation of which W B dennis is manager and owner of one of the largest and most promising quicksilver mines in the west is preparing to place a much greater equipment and operate the mine on a large scale the company has confined its efforts in the past largely to the work of development the mines are located on black butte mountain of the cala poola range the cinnabar ore is found in an intricate system of fractures and veins permeating the ni mountain and to open up these over feet of tunnels adits adias up raises and general underground workings have been driven giving a vertical depth oi of 1500 feet unbroken pay chutes 1200 feet in length are found along the main fractures between the surface and the foot level and the values are increasing as depth is gained the property is at present equipped with a 50 ton fon fine fina ore furnace but the new plant will be of much greater capacity the ore is treated at a cost of sixty seven cents a ton L DENNIS ENN ig H STOVALL |
