Show lj in I 1 newfoundland district examine ogan sa r I 1 don maguire the well known ogden mining man who returned yesterday from a trip to park city stated in an interview that he had rece recently antly made a thorough examination of a group of mines lying in the new Found land district 55 miles west of ogden managed and largely owned by charles T birchard of boston and considered them among the finest and most promising silver properties in the intermountain states considering the extent of their development he further said the mines known as the silver king group in the new Found land district are among the most promising in utah this district between 1871 and 1880 produced in the neighborhood of from the rich veins which are found in a number of mines in that locality in those days the district was almost inaccessible being situated in the heart of the great american desert 35 miles south of the southern pacific railway and 60 miles north of the mormon settlements southwest of salt lake city because of the isolation limited attention was paid to the very rich mineral veins known to exist there A miner of those days named chris knowlton possessing more than ordinary nerve associated himself with a few determined spirits and taking possession of a considerable area of mining ground in that district begun development all of the supplies and material required in the development of the mines were carried across the desert even the water supply for their needs being taken with them from grantsville Grants ville A number of cabins were built and work begun on the mines now known as the silver king group work was carried on to a depth of feet on an incline and at each feet levels 19 were driven to right and left for a distance of about feet each the ore taken from the first level carried down half way between the first and second levels and from this small area so worked about 75 00 was produced which most of was carried out by pack animals to grantsville Grants ville utah and thence by wagons to the smelters shelters sm elters at sandy south of salt lake where it was di disposed Posed of at the then market price in this way altogether about was produced proceed from this group in III the latter part of the chris KO knowlton was killed by accident and this splendid property from theotime the time of his death was neglected until complete aban dorment by its former owners took place and d the locality situated as it was in the midst m ast dst of the american desert was well nigh forgotten gotten until about 1900 when some prospectors from salt lake ran across the old workings Or Ings finding them to be of more than ordinary merit they located a number of claims but themselves men of limited means they looked for men of capital who might be able to purchase and develop the th e same A few months following the second discovery of this property mr birchard then visiting utah went with his associates and examined these mines and through the advice of some of the ablest experts in the intermountain country he secured title to the same after which he began a thorough development of the entire property at the same time securing large additional area chief of which is known as the shepard group which he incorporated with that of the silver king mr birchard did not immediately begin to remove ore from the old workings but thought best through the advice of his then engineer to start work on a tunnel at a point about 1200 feet north of the old workings intending by this means to cut the vein about GOO feet deeper than the mouth of the incline shaft begun by mr knowlton in his life time this work has now been carried to a length of feet and at the same time desultory work of prospecting and development has been carried on in different parts of the property the results of which prove the existence of large bodies of very high grade lead ore running well in gold and silver in the shepard vein which lies to the northeast of the silver king vein and which vein it joins as a contact at its east end these two veins may be considered the most conspicuous and promising in the district inasmuch as already extensive bodies of ore are exposed in the workings and upon the completion of the present tunnel when the same shall have cut the ore bodies of the silver king vein very few mines in the state of utah can be said to afford a better prospect of immediate returns for the amount of work done than this property about which so little is mentioned in our public press the formation of the locality is an ideal ore new Found land mountain rises boldly from the heart of the desert to an altitude of almost feet of which rises directly above the great american desert the formations are granite at base rock upon which rests a measure of cambrian quartzite 1800 feet in thickness and this in turn capped by carboniferous limestone the entire three measures being rifted drifted at many points by very strong diorite and porphyry dikes contiguous to which and running piral parallel lel with the same is a fine strong vein like the shepard and also the silver king veins accompanying these dikes we also find frequent inclusions of porphyry through both the limestone ani and quartzite within the last la st three years a spring of excellent water has been discovered within and one half miles of the silver king ground in a deep canyon to the northward this mr birchard also secured and it promises an ample supply of water for milling and household purposes and adding to the good fortune of the district within the last one and a half years the southern pacific in building its cutoff cut off across salt lake has carried its line to within five miles of this new district thereby affording the mines an approach both in the direction of ogden and also from the california route those who have within the last twelve months visited this locality basing their experience peri ence on years of mining elsewhere have pronounced the district one of the most promising in the state of utah for the amount of work which hasteen has been done there and mr birchard in the work at present being done promises within the year 1904 to open a bigg bigger er bonanza than has hitherto been developed within the desert regions west of salt lake along with these properties now owned by the silver king mining company and managed by mr birchard there are a number of other groups on which work is now being done the locality has now but very little vacant ground remaining during the coming summer atas it is anticipated that the mines already worked will be made to ray pay largely with a very small amount of development work |
