Show I 1 iron works and biest furnaces from fm the ogden oden state state T journal n 4 the iron works at ogden are like lazarus to be resurrected after having lain in th the tomb of neglect longer than lazarus lay it has been known for more than thirty years that ogden in point of natural resources and railway situation was the ideal spot in the western country for the establishment lish ment of blast furnaces and for shops in which to work up pig iron the failure of preceding efforts to bring these resources and opportunities to a realization reads like a community tragedy first we had iron works and they were operated successfully they made the best iron in the world but the business incapacity of the men associated with it wrecked the works A noted citizen of ogden charles zelmer who was largely interested at the time and yet had no voice in the direction lost much money happily he recouped his fortune before he passed away good old I 1 A brown undertook the work intelligently and energetically but he could not secure sufficient operation cooperation co to push the matter to success two or three abortive r efforts were made during succeeding years to resuscitate the enterprise finally the old iron works were purchased by D R G railway interests and hopes in ogden rose to fever heat we all expected to see the dead come to life and walk in vigor and splendor but the purchase was really for the purpose of quieting all possibility of iron works at this point the desire being to give a monopoly to the works at pueblo for intermountain business now the trumpet has sounded again A corporation was effected today under the name of the utah iron and mining company which starting modestly may grow into the great establishment which the people of ogden have so long desired it is capitalized at shares of one dollar each its directors and officers are louis W shurtliff president P W lamoreaux vice president thomas farr secretary F M farrell treasurer and V peet there are in the treasury shares of stock mr farrell is an iron worker of twenty four years experience in minnesota and utah for some time past he has been conducting a foundry machine and boiler shop in ogden with considerable success he has had to import his iron and has found it costly and inferior in quality to that which could be produced here by contract with the company he will erect at this point a blast furnace of twenty tons a day capacity mr farrell is convinced that a plant of this size can find instant market f for or its product in fact this company would ex hect to practically utilize the twenty tons in its own foundries there would be some danger in a larger plant at the present time it would be costly it would invite opposition the company asks no bonus from the citizens of ogden nor does mr farrell but it is earnestly hoped by the leading spirits of the new enterprise that citizens of ogden will take some of the treasury stock no better cause could be undertaken by the weber club committee on manufactures than this iron enterprise it would mean everything to ogden mr farrell who is chief engineer of the company has ordered two blowers from the mine and smelter supply company coin pany and he has on hand the steel with which to build the place it is is understood that active operations will begin at once and that the blast furnace will be ready for use within six months of this date mr farrell has made tests of the ores from the companas comp anys properties in one of them he ran through his bis furnace pounds of ore in one hour and twenty minutes with a result of pounds of pig iron soft and pliable and of most excellent quality |
