have made records in this regard of which they may well feel proud and for which but little credit has been given in this respect idaho parades in the front ranks indeed it treads closely upon the heels of california in the production of the yellow metal in quartz and placer gold being the of idaho since the W wall all street metal was first found in the gravel de deposits posits and in the mighty ledges of the mountain ranges is this all that idaho can of this state stat e nor lay claim to as in the matter of lead production it heads the list of states according to government reports hardships privations and perila which could easily furnish the material for a most reada readable ble article which in intensity of interest would outrival out rival some works of fiction of our most popular it was in the year 1879 that W S mc cornick then as now a prominent salt lake banker samuel A meritt chief ahle f justice TU S of utah and M H lipman a mining investor and merchant of this city forme 1 a company for the purpose of prospecting tor for the precious metals and to engage in a general mining business mr lipman was selected as manager for the company and it was not long before he had his outfit ready for the field the intention being to prospect pyo in the wood river country idaho from which section many flattering reports had been received composing mr lipmanas Lip mans party were janes james stafford ben bea kennedy and A D williams and in the month of may of the year stated the vanguard of civilization set out on its travels after several weeks spent on the road the party reached lost river miles northwest of salt lake city here it was ascertained that the shoshone indians were on the war oath and a return was made to kelton utah from which point the old Ove overland route for boise was followed until what is known as rock creek station offered facilities for a brief rest here fortunately an made by george and thomas egington and a mr lewis of ogden who arrived in the district in the spring of 1880 the mines mentioned proved to be bonanzas from the grass roots and the ore was of very high v afe iw W r 5 44 wd wa igel l ve e IM 55 L 41 V POINT LOOKOUT ON THE SIDE old frontiersman and scout a mr dill was met with and this gentleman was engaged as guide from rock creek station to the wood river country a distance of miles the hardy prospectors followed the malad river through the lava beds and as this was the only stream within a radius of a hundred miles or more it was dangerous to leave its course however crooked it might be this portion of the journey which was one of great hardships occupied fifteen days on the day of june little wood river was reached where a stop of several days was made after which the divide was crossed and the treasure seekers descended into the big wood river rive country and camped on what is now the far famed silver creek here a permanent camp was established and the search for deposits of the precious and baser metals began in earnest the first discovery of importance being made by ben kennedy consisting of the now low famous scorpion mine in scorpion gulch which was later on relocated re located under the name of the croesus mine the croesus has always been a great producer and was sold to the kilpatrick bros of lincoln nebraska for bullion camp was found by mr stafford on may 1880 he was so deeply impressed with the great mineral showing in this section that he at once made a number of choice locations aich which he designated as the bullion ophir point foint lookout highland chief ever green y queen and saturn the mayflower jay hy gould and several other locations were grade the first shipment from the bullion mine was made on august ath 1880 by mr lipman the returns from the ore cre buyers showing values of 68 per cent lead est workings of its mines at the present day with the exception of the minnie moore not exceeding feet and taking it all in all no other mining camp of the west has made a better showing than this which from mere surface workings has produced the wealth of a vanderbilt the riches of a rothschild loth the great silver lead belt of the wood river mining district extends from the minnie moore mine on the southeast routh east to the red cloud mines 0 on n the northwest a distance of over ten tan miles having as a center the celebrated camp of bullion which contains the following producers mayflower lay jay gould idahoan red elephant and point lookout which have produced their millions beside these mines a great number of smaller properties have produced amounts running from a few thousands up to one hundred thousand in addition to the production of this first class ore these mines carry a vast quantity quan city of second class ore which concentrates about four into one and the concentrates cen carry about 60 per cent lead and from to ounces in silver to the ton in the development of the mines on this belt the veins faulted at a depth of about feet and this taken with the great fall in the price of silver discouraged the owners from doing any further development work or prospecting and therefore this s camp lay idle for several years in 1902 1 I E rockwell of chicago the present owner of ra I 1 TIM 79 74 4 lk OLD blacksmith sirop AND TOOL HOUSE AT POINT LOOKOUT MINE TUNNEL ounces silver and a few dollars in gold to the mhd ton such in brief is the early history of the wood river district a camp which since its first discovery has produced twenty million ani and pore iacre in lead silver ani and ld the deep the minnie moore mine on investigation became convinced that the faulting of the veins of this belt was not permanent on intelligently developing the property his judgment was full justified and today this mine is proving fully Vs as valuable as in its early days after going through the fault the vein was discovered and has been persistently explored ever since and at the present writing the owners are sinking on the vein below the 1000 foot level and are in ore all the way showing conclusively the continuity of the veins downward below the fault the present development of the mine shows a vein of solid galena ore from seven to nine feet wide carrying ounces silver and 72 per lead and the mine is shipping a car load a day mr M H lipman who was the manager of the bullion mine in the early days and who shipped the first carload of ore from this district being of the same opinion as mr rockwell and wishing to prove the value of the mines of the old camp of bullion took a bond on the point lookout mine which with W S mccornick he had owned up to 1883 this property is situated in the center of the great bullion group the red elephant which has produced nearly one million dollars joins the point lookout on the west and the mayflower and bullion which have also produced millions on the east mr lipman started development work by sinking a from the old tunnel level and opened a good body of ore which gave returns from the halley hailey sampling works of ounces silver 48 per cent lead and 6 in gold finding that a much cheaper way to develop this property wo would uld be by a deep tunnel mr lipman has organized the lipman mine tunnel company this tunnel starting in the deep canyon of red elephant gulch will run northeast a distance of about feet tapping the point lookout and red elephant contact at a depth of 1200 feet from the apex of the vein the point lookout mine which is cne of gf the companas comp anys properties is one of the oldest producers in this district and at present is being developed by sinking a shaft feet irom from the lowest tunnel level on the bullion side which will eventually be ba connected with the deep tunnel from the red elephant gulch side A new gasoline hoist has just been installed in the property and a new boax boarding ding and bunk house a blacksmith shop and a timber shed have also been erected putting this property in shape to be worked vigorously all winter the lipman mines tunnel company possess acres of ground covering these I 1 veins and the lipman tunnel will crosscut cross cut thle the entire property I 1 the red elephant group which joins the lipman mines mine s tunnel companas comp anys property on the west has recently been acquired by W V rice and W W armstrong of salt lake city utah and others they have started work by pumping out the shaft and cleaning out the old workings and re timbering the entire mine they may congratulate themselves on acquiring this famous group of mines as its past record of producing nearly one million dollars with not more than feet of depth makes Us its history phe nominaL the deep tunnel enterprise of the lipman mines and tunnel company promises to prove the salvation of this great camp besides opening up and proving the property of the company at great depth it will also give an easy ou outlet alet for or others owning I 1 ground along its course thereby greatly decreasing operating expenses and simplifying mining operations bullion camp from halley hailey is difficult of access the way is steep and rugged but the tunnel when wh en completed will provide a thoroughfare that will doubtless be taken advantage of by many who are interested in that section but important as it is in all its bearings it will te be of the greatest value to the lipman company which by its means will be able to explore its own possessions to great depth and it will enable the management to mine with the greatest economy the great bodies of rich and low grade ores which this great bore will penetrate and open up at the mouth of the tunnel at no distant day it is proposed to construct concentrating works and is also the intention to build an electric railway line from the tunnels mouth to the sampling works at halley hailey by means of which crude ores and concentrates can be transported to the railroad at a minimum expenses the mining review has been requested not to enlarge upon the purposes and plans of the company it being the policy to keep these in abeyance until such time as the great tunnel shall be completed when other enterprises of almost equal importance will doubtless be carried out as even now projected still it is safe to say that in its scope its usefulness its promise of handsome profit and the soundness of its undertaking the enterprise of this company should appeal strongly to the experienced mining man the investor and to the careful business man the support it is being given by those who are acquainted with the country with its mines and with its mineral ini possibilities b eing being demonstrated by the fact that the business men and residents of halley hailey have already subscribed for shares of the capital stock of the company with the intention expressed of increasing I 1 their holdin holdings s to at least shar shares es the lipman mines tunnel company has lately been
