Show BIG DISCOVERY NEAR ATLANTA statesman boise ida A very rich gold discovery has bees been made in the atlanta section it is on black warrior creek four miles from its confluence i with the middle fork of the boise eight miles below atlanta the main ledge of the new district is feet wide it pans from wall to wall but there has been one streak opened that carries a sugar quartz carrying according to an average sample a ton in gold this ore is free milling showing no iron or other base metal the discovery has excited the men about atlanta and a large number of them have gone into the district to secure claims this great discovery was made something over three weeks ago by thomas walker and charles birdwell mr walker had been looking during two or three seasons for the source of the gold in black warrior creek and was finally successful this summer As soon as the necessary claims had been staked the men came to boise to report to max mayfield who is interested with them having outfitted them for their campaign in the hills the rock brought down did not give much outward appearance of its wealth when it was taken to assayer pack he was asked if he thought it would run his reply was that it might or might not only a test could determine the point some of it was then panned for his benefit and he was surprised to see a long string of colors his assay of an average of the two foot streak returned while a sample from another ledge returned on this showing mr mayfield determined to visit the find and he was off in a short time he returned yesterday after a trip extending over twelve days mr mayfield took charles B E ewing assistant superintendent of the monarch mine in with him also L S bishop from boise the latter being a well known mining man they found the conditions exactly as represented by the prospectors the main ledge is plainly visible running up the mountain side for more than 1000 feet it is called the black warrior and on it three claims have been located the black warrior nos 1 2 and 3 an open cut has been made on the rich streak which seemed when mr mayfield was there to be widening as the work progressed it is not known what the rest of the vein will assay but bannings pann ings from all points on it showed colors while much of the ore appeared to be of very good grade two holes have been opened on the rich streak and in both the conditions are the same it is not known whether any other such rich streak exists but the general average of the vein is believed to be good |
