Show OUR QUARTER CENTURY anniversary with this issue the salt lake mining review rounds out the twenty fifth year of its existence counting the years as a youngster calculates the time when he shall have attained his majority and severed the apron strings that had held him in leash it seems a long time since the first issue came from the press and will C higgins its editor and harry B cole its business manager sat back in their office chairs and contemplated the results of their efforts gauged by the activities of years devoted to an unceasing determination to make the publication reflect and record the growth and legitimate worth of the metal mining industry the lapse of time might better be measured by months than years so interesting and so fascinating has been the task of the publishers and so loyal and generous has been the aid of friends and its hundreds of contributing writers that it has all the time created a feeling in the magazines official household that life is worth living af after ter all since the first issue of the mining review on april 1899 it has been a faithful chronicler of live mining news covering the western mining regions it has also accorded space for the advancement of mining metallurgical smelting smelling sm elting and other methods and problems related to the business of winning wealth and distinction in the industry of mining it is still at work and expects to continue championing the cause until gabriel blows his horn the magazine has always encouraged the prospectors and small sma anine owners in their efforts to finance their proper v ties as far as legitimate effort was justifiable it has shown the same attitude to greater and more pretentious undertakings and it expects to continue in so doing of the men most influential in making the mining industry what it is today and whose careers have been followed and accomplishments recorded in the columns of the mining review may be mentioned such outstanding characters as capt J R delamar robt C chambers john dern jesse knight thomas kearns david keith col S B milner col E A wall W S mccornick A F holden alex tarbet robert C gemmel P T farnsworth and many others whose names escape us for the moment these men have quit the field and have passed into the 6 great beyond but they have left permanent monuments to mark their active careers and worth while accomplishments in the metal mining industry of the west there yet remains many men still in the profession who knew and many who worked with those mentioned and who are still carrying on in another quarter of a century most of them will have answered the final summons we do not know who will record the events of their going but the mining review will be here to enter their names in its lasting pages of history just as it has for those who have gone before just a word touching advertising in every issue of the mining review during twenty five years the salt lake hardware co the biggest and best hardware establishment between st louis and san francisco has been represented in the display advertising Z 3 pages 6 of this magazine 6 it is fitting that we should say to the management of this great establishment we greet you now for another twenty five year sprint |
