Show camp of willard wa nevada striding riding st to the front BY JAMES F OBRIEN willard nev april 26 the 30 ton gibson mill which was erected during the winter by the jose davis mining milling company on the steve young ranch two miles from the camp of willard has been put in perfect running order and started up an ore that averages between 80 and per ton according to R W brooks who readjusted the mill for the manufacturers representative and who has no financial interest whatever in the jose davis company coincident with the starting up of the mill what has been heralded as a strike of high grade picture rock was made in a raise from the lower tunnel being driven on the jose davis lease on the sheepherder mine at willard ten miles northeast of lovelock according to an official of the company however it is not a new strike at all in the ordinary sense of the word for it is simply picking up at greater depth the downward extension of the same high grade ore shoot that has been continuously in evidence ever since it was first opened up on the ground this really makes it a find of even greater importance than it if it were a new Z r 4 er J X 4 i tk A I 1 aa 42 portal of lower tunnel jose davis companas Comp anys lease on sheepherder mine camp willard nevada strike for it proves up the high grade shoot between the lower and the upper tunnels and makes it its rake northeast and into the mountain the them sheepherder vein which was first opened up in a leasers leaders lea sers shaft strikes north 55 degrees east and dips north 35 degrees west the upper tunnel on the jose davis com banys lease is in feet and follows the vein nearly all the way while even the lower grade ores are quite a little better than the usual average of mill ore that which comes from the high grade shoot is f fairly entitled to be called picture rock without having to apologize for that much abused expression the free gold which is plentifully sprinkled throughout in much uch of the ore has more than the ordinary brightness and luster and it is significant t that it is thoroughly disseminated through the ore and is not merely in seams and cleavages there is enough eno ugh of this kind of rock in sight so that the writer has no disposition to doubt the statement of an off official acial of the company that a comparatively small amount of development put in sight tons of ore that will average per ton this also alg makes it easy to believe that the tests of mr brooks were accurate when they slowed showed the average grade of the ore going through the mill and in the bins to run from 80 to per ton values big at half rating in the early days of goldfield the writer made a frequent practice of cutting values in two when writing of high grade ore for his syndicate news letters and for his paper the goldfield news he can do that with the is ideally situated on the edge of one of the most fertile valleys in the world and the company is fortunate in having an abundant supply of warm water which was developed by sinking a well only twenty five feet there appears to be no great amount of mineral in the water but it is decidedly warm which will vill prove of advantage during the winter rn months though the grade of ore now being treated is unusually high to be put through a mill it is 7 7 aw 4 A k n i axt S 94 wr 3 quartz cropping on new willard mine camp willard nevada the jose davis companas comp anys ore and still have it good enough say the ore runs 40 to 50 per ton instead of 80 to as mr brookes tests show and figure only the rated capacity of the mill thirty tons per day though that can doubtless be crowded crowde d after it has been running for a w while hile the vein in the sheepherder goes from four to six feet in width it is well defined and strong and while neither eminent geologist nor tenderfoot can see six inches into afe 9 round ground there is every reason to believe that it will persist to considerable depth and carry its present high grade values certainly there is no evidence to the contrary in the development done so far even with the ore above the present deepest workings it is figured that the mill can be kept running steadily at capacity for some time and it if the values es average but one half of that of the ore first put through the mill it will be seen that the jose davis company has what the boys would call a mighty good little proposition it is only a two mile downhill down hill haul from the sheepherder mine to the mill of the jose jose davis company and the hauling is done by a best tractor in specially built wagons said that the gibson is particularly successful on or ore of the he character of the sheep herders gerders her ders and that 85 per cent of the gold values are saved in the amalgam chambers most of the balance being caught on the plates the control of the jose davis company is now owned by john etchebarren pre president aident of the Stock growers and ranchers bank of reno and his associates henry ward is in charge at the mine in addition to its lease on the sheepherder which is now producing so well athe the company owns outright a number of cla claims ms close by on which good ore has been found which will be developed later new willards good showing billy beauchamp who with former congressman gress nian roberts organized the jose davis company is now devoting his entire time and attention to the new willard mining company of which he has recently taken over the total stock issue beauchamp who is a cousin of champ dark clark is one of the best known miners in nevada and was one of the successful bunch of leasers leaders on the mizpah in the early days of the tono pah the fact that the sheepherder develop ments have justified his predictions gives give him greater confidence that hi his belief that the new willard will prove even better is well founded his good opinion of the new willard he says is shared by such me men abt as E J schrader former eng engineer in eer for t the h e humphrey interests rests and W H blackburn general manager of the tonopah minin mining gil company 1 l the new willard has a mother dike simm sim j ilar to that of the sheepherder with nun num j erous cross fractures such as have made maden the ores on the latter the main vein as well as several of the cross veins of tie the sheepherder run through a portion of the new willard ground but it is from the parallel vein system that most is expected the most striking and interesting feature is at a point about 1100 feet north of the sheepherder where two main veins of the new willard intersect forming a massive body of quartz feet in width the quartz droppings crop pings on the new willard can be traced for a length of 2500 feet it is the intention of mr beauchamp to sint sink the main working shaft on a showing he discovered while prospecting the ground where the red quartz is identical in appear ance with that which carries the high highest est i values in the sheepherder while much 4 of the sheepherder ore carries so much visible gold that no assayers certificate is necessary to prove that it is rich consider able of this red quartz shows n no 0 free gold but assays essays from per ton up several months ago a lovelock citizen who was vis aj wi A tk 1 R 4 loading ore at jose davis dails lease sheepherder She epher camp willard nevada biting the mine expressed doubt of that last a of statement he was invited to take some the ore and have it assayed ile he took toa of sample had it assayed and got returns attempting to prove pr over to ton in that only the ore with visible gold was 11 high grade he happened to select one for the richest pieces of rock in tl the e mine there is no attempt to create the that any great amount of the ore will run per ton new strike in the sunset A new strike was recently made by tom jewett in the tunnel on his sunset group which adjoins the new willard on the south the ore has held out since it was first struck and while so far no picture rock such as that in the sheepherder high grade shoot has been found yet it is a good grade of mill ore assays essays as high as 40 have been secured but the average is probably not over 20 per ton jewett who is close to 75 years of age has done most of the work on this property alone tom owens who made a strike of good ore showing considerable free gold some months ago on the bangor group immediately ay north of the new willard has abandoned driving the tunnel because it does not gain depth fast enough and is now sinking a shaft on the ore he is down thirty feet and is still in the same grade and character of rock warranting the belief that lie he will add another to the list of good mines which he has found and developed among them being the coalition mine at seven troughs which produced much very rich ore the entire section from the jose davis and sheepherder ground through the sunsets new willard and bangora Ban gors is heavily mineralized and threaded by veins and cross veins with better than the average grade of ore especially in view of the probability that gold producers will soon be given a bonus on their product there is some silver in willard ore but the principal values are in gold it is likely that this camp will soon witness much greater activity |
