Show coal mine electric locomotive with unique record an electric mine locomotive that has a unique record for longevity and service is at present operating in the mine of the union pacific coal company at rock springs wyoming the locomotive was built by the thomson houston company arid and was put in service at its present location twenty seven years ago it has been giving continuous service ever since records kept by the union pacific coal company showing that it has hauled tons of coal over an average distance of 15 miles in that time or a total of tons miles comparatively little trouble due to the breakage of springs it has also the low record among the locomotives co used in the mines oi of this company for repair charges and consequently in cost per ton of ocal hauled in fact it is held to be just as efficient in operation as any of the recently designed locomotives in their service the feature that is held largely responsible for the low upkeep is the use of the semi elliptical leaf spring construction it is interesting ot note in this connection that the electric company have re I 1 d A if all 44 INV ILI 4 aja it al ca kab N the locomotive is type 30 6 terrapin back volt with a speed of eight miles per hour its capacity is nine tons with a pound draw bar pull and the wheel diameter is twenty eight inches the locomotive is equipped with one motor having a single field coil and the old gramme ring armature the original field coil is still in service and has never given any trouble two armatures have been used one the iri ginal furnished when the locomotive was bought and another spare one the com are very much smaller than those used at the present time for volts and ave of them have been worn out in service the original was the semi cir cular disk type which has since been abandoned the present control is an controller and a jefery pancake resistor the original brake rigging is still in ili service and the gears have also given excellent service service F as only three of them have been worn out the locomotive Is equipped with leaf springs which support its weight on the journal box it has been used on a very rough road but they have hal had turned to this design in their trolley locomotives with the addition of an equalizer bar to distribute the weight more evenly it also has the low record among the locomotives used in the mines of this company for repair charges and consequently in cost per ton of coal hauled in fact it is held to be just as efficient in operation as any of the recently designed locomotives in their service the feature that is held largely responsible for the low upkeep is the use of the semi elliptical leaf spring construction st it is interesting to not note e in this connection that the general electric company have returned to this ensign in their trolley locomotives the addition of an equalizer bar to distribute the weight more evenly |
