Show WILL CUT MINERS WAGES alex wise superintendent of the consolidated soli dated virginia ophir sierra nevada and other northend mines has notified the miners employed by these companies that the wage scale will be reduced to 5 per day clay commencing january 1 1921 on september ath the employed emp loyes demand ed a raise from 5 to 6 per day and upon their demand being refused they quit work three days later the consolidated virginia and ophir mines granted the increase the gold hill mines operated by the united comstock mines company stood pat and have continued work though with a smaller force at the old scale the consolidated virginia and ophir are the only producing mines on the comstock lode other properties desire to start development work but feel that they cannot afford to do so and pay the 6 scale at the time of the walkout the mining companies claimed the existence of a contract with the miners union at virginia city and gold hill for a 5 scale until january 1 1921 the walkout was not officially sanctioned by the unions |
