Show DATA ON OIL SHALE INDUSTRY for the past two years numerous inquiries for information on oil shale have been received by the bureau of mines of the department of the interior and these inquiries have been increasing to such an extent that it has been deemed advisable to issue a short paper giving a general discussion of the subject and to furnish a comprehensive list of references so that those interested in the details of obtaining oil from shale can obtain such information without difficulty A number of those seeking information are interested only in a general discussion of the subject and are not in a position to refer to books and articles describing the industry some of the information has been derived from books and articles ment mentioned ione in the list of references and has been compiled with the idea of furnishing general information to those not interested in all the details the paper reviews the history of the oil shale industry in scotland presents the status of the industry in the united states compares conditions in scotland with those in this country and draws a comparison between the petroleum industry and the oil shale industry since the f former is firmly established in this country and the principal products to be obtained from oil shale are closely related to those obtained from petroleum economic features which will have to do with the development of the industry are also brought out and discussed the paper also contains directions for testing shale for oil and ammonia yields prepared by E M bailey chief chemist of the pumpherston Pump herston oil company the largest producers of shale oil products in scotland and describes the methods in use by the united states geological survey for assaying the bibliography is a comprehensive list of references treating the subject from all angles and it is believed to embody all the important articles on the subject both in this country and in scotland as well as numerous articles published in other countries copies of this paper may be obtained by addressing the bureau of mines washington D C and also the bureau of mines experiment station salt lake city utah |
