Show WILLIAM G SHARP word was received in salt lake on the 2nd and dinst of the death at his home near boston the day before of william gibson sharp there is hardly a mining man in the west who did not know mr sharp personally or who did not know of the successes he had achieved in business mining and smelting smelling sm elting circles he was born in salt lake in 1857 and was the son of john and anne sharp one of old time and respected families he received his early education in the school of this city graduating from the deseret university he entered the rensselaer polytechnic institute at troy new york where he graduated in 1879 with a degree of chief engineer afterwards taking a postgraduate post graduate course at columbia university returning to salt lake he held several positions of honor and importance being for a tim in the service of the united states geological survey he also identified himself with mining operations and for a time was with the pleasant valley coal company and also the castlegate Cast legate coal company and directed the affairs of these enterprises terp rises until 1900 when he accepted a position as manager of the consolidated coal company of west virginia for a period of thirteen years mr sharp was president of the united states smelt ing refining mining company and he held this position at the time of his death being elected to fill this important office soon after its organization in 1906 during the years of his residence in utah he was an active leader in public affairs and was a member of the convention which framed the the constitution of the state eighteen years ago mr sharp was joined in marriage to miss hester harkness of salt lake a daughter of the late judge robert harkness besides his widow mr sharp is survived by his sister mrs jeanette ferguson of salt lake a brother joseph E sharp of price utah and his brother in law robert B harkness a prominent salt lake attorney words are inadequate to 10 express the sorrow felt at the loss of mr sharp nature had endowed him with both physical and intellectual graces he was a man of fine personal appearance and possessed a mind stored with wisdom and knowledge in disposition he was affable and was admired and loved by all who knew him As to his integrity and honesty these traits of character were beyond question and his capacity for business and his ability in this direction led to the high and important positions held by him for many years before his death his passing is keenly felt in mining and business circles and his friends of whom there are legions will join with the mining review in I 1 expressions of sympathy and condolence to his bereaved family and relatives funeral services for the deceased were held in salt lake on sunday july 6 the ceremonies being conducted by the rev W W fleetwood of st marks burial was at mt olivet the pallbearers pall bearers were D S spencer judge william M bradley joseph galligher general R W young george W heintz and E B wicks |
