Show AMERICAN MINING CONGRESS MEETING washington D C sept 24 upon invitation from the combined commercial bodies of st louis and missouri the american mining congress which has not held a national meeting since november 1916 will assemble in st louis during the week of november for a five day discussion of the vital issues now facing the mining industry and american industry as a whole the chicago convention of this organization the last held owing to the government request for a suspension of such activities tivi ties was notable both for numbers in attendance and character of the work accomplished complis hed much of the expressed spirit of bf the convention having been felt in national legislation since war conditions forced the administration to attempt paternalism in dealing with industrial matters the scope of the work the scope of the work of the american mining congress has been greatly enlarged during the past year and many of the larger producers who have previously been nominal supporters of the movement are now actively participating through one of the several divisions of the work the recent demands of the railroad employees for increased pay and bonuses in the form of retroactive tro active advances coming just as the plumb plan of railroad control was presented aroused the mining congress and it was decided to hold a 4 convention at which the industrial conditions of the country can be freely and thoroughly discussed there are many activities in the air which directly affect mining of coal min brals or oil including not only the railroad problem but the general industrial conditions which are far from being normal or satisfactory the american mining congress representing the various branches of wasting industry plans to call together the most representative conference ever assembled to discuss the business politics of the nation discussion of grave problems the discussion of the grave problems now confronting the nation would be of no avail if not resulting in the building of bf a program of national reconstruction acceptable alike to the industries to labor and to congress and it will be the business of this convention to chart the hi high t h seas for congress with an economic routing which may have the backing of the nations producers of raw materials and of such other industries as will participate in these conferences feren ces 11 in connection with the meeting secre secretary is lane of the department of interior planning to make a complete exhibit of the t historical development of mining and of the work of the department slice since its organ a tion this exposition which will occupy 1600 square feet of floor and 2800 square feet of wall space will be installed in the planters hotel where the sessions of the congress will be held |
