Show present activity of mines of manhattan nevada SPECIAL correspondence J A cole mine superintendent at tile white caps reports that the company shaft has reached a depth of sixty seven feet below the fourth level and all shaft timbers are in place this represents a footage made in the shaft of twenty two feet for the week an excellent rate of progress in sinking a double compartment shaft the flow of water encountered in the shaft sinking is small not over 2000 gallons in twenty four hours licurs the sinking pump whilst hung ready for use in the shaft so far has not been placed in operation as the handling of the water by bailing takes but little time and is of less bother to the mine crew than having tile the large sinker to handle at the bottom of the shaft the ground through which the shaft is being sunk remains consistent in texture being a hard cherty material but breaks well to the rounds put in by the shaft crew the excessive ces sive flow of water recently developed in tile the east drift work from the third level mentioned in last weeks report has not diminished mini shed as yet to any appreciable extent it was very lucky for the mine that the flow was encountered in the middle of the shift as if the water had not appeared until the round was shot probably the entire lower workings would have been flooded and great damage done the water was struck in a cut drill hole whilst being drilled and was plugged before the sump filled A four inch pipe with a pressure valve has been installed and from the pressure readings it can be closely estimated as to the amount of water still behind the face of the drift at present there is sixty five pounds pressure on the valve in five minutes after shutting off the flow the flow of water is siphoned from the third to the fourth level where it is picked up by the large station pump and also by using the auxiliary station pump intermittently the water is kept under control and none escapes into the shaft this flow of water is one of the best of indications pointing to the immediate proximity of another great ore body as yet undeveloped it should be noted that similar flows of water have already been encountered in running tile the drifts just prior to striking the present ore bodies A flood gate is being installed inthe in the west drift on the third level as the management believes in preparedness mill construction work in the construction work in the white caps mill the ri vetting of the roaster shell etc has been completed the form for the brick work for the first hearth has also been finished ready for the bricklayers brick layers seven expert bricklayers brick layers with a leader are now dow en route from reno to lay the brick for the roaster the roaster when complete will have seven hearths and one drying hearth the total weight of the roaster as shipped from the east 1 is s 5 25 to tons n s a and n d with the exception of about tons of brick still in tonopah To the entire material has been delivered on the ground the capacity of the roaster when in operation is expected to be approximately tons for each twenty four hours on white caps ore the maximum capacity is tons the difference in amount of tonnage handled depending on oil the heat required in roasting the ore a dead roast naturally requiring more time for each charge of ore the mine ore bin construction has been completed and a dodge 11 by 15 crusher is now installed on its foundation close to the collar of the mine shaft the cru crusher S her building and housing covering twenty by sixty feet is in process of erection the main belt conveyor installation is completely finished and this completes the installation of all the belt conveyers with the exception of a short section of the conveyor to the roaster which will be finished upon completion of the roaster the new wagon road to pipe springs from the white caps has been completed to the first summit it above the mine ploughing sloughing hing and scraping work is in progress on the section of the road east of the summit morning glory mining company the working shaft of tile the morning glory has now reached a depth of ninety feet timbered superintendent nelson states that the formation in the bottom of the shaft is encouraging being in broken up limestone the values which have shown for some distance in the shaft pinking are steadily increasing as depth is gained and due to the proximity of the white caps west ore body a vein carrying commercial values may be encountered at any time in addition to tile the sinking work two shifts of miners are engaged in prospect work from the bottom of the old nelson lease shaft this shaft is seventy five feet deep and its location is between the company working shaft and tile the white caps west side line on the surface considerable trenching drenching tren ching has been kept up by tile the company along the breaks showing on the surface to be in proper shape for the carrying on of extensive mine work the management plans to make a change in the hoisting equipment immediately taking out the present twenty horsepower hoist and installing a forty horsepower electric hoist and motor in addition an air line will be laid to the consolidated soli dated and sufficient air be obtained to operate two drills two jackhammer drills have been ordered and by this installation the mining work will be greatly speeded up and the cost per foot appreciably di mini shed manhattan consolidated mines Dav develon Ds velon elop ment company in the consolidated workings on the foot level at a distance of seventy one feet aas east t from the shaft the mud fault which lias has been so well defined and developed both from the upper levels of the present working shaft of tile the company and also from the workings extended from the old company shaft has been struck and the face of the crosscut cross cut is now into the fault a distance of ten feet whilst it is impossible to state definitely the exact width of the mud fault as the various places where it has been encountered and crosscut cross cut show a wid width th of from ten to forty feet at last there is a tangible object to refer to in locating the position of tile the ore body in connection therewith the ore body is known to be directly against the mud fault as shown where developed in the old workings on the foot level of the present workings the mud fault rakes north and south and the ore body ends where the mud fault is encountered on the present 00 foot level the fault rakes east and west paralleling the ledge so that now it can be confidently expected that the mud fault cuts out and that the great sulphide ore body will on deeper levels be found in that section of the silver pick claim of t the ie consolidated on soli dated company west from the working shaft this will give a footage for the ledge on the limestone belt of over fest feet to the western compromise line between the consolidated and union amalgamated properties due to the loose broken up condition of the mud fault the footle made with each si shifts lifts work is small Is as every foot of tile the crosscut cross cut has to be I 1 heavily water ha has 9 0 o timbered but little seepage far been encountered manhattan mustang mining company the phenomenal showings of sulphide sulP ilide ore as mentioned in last weeks report as appearing in the bottom of the western sunk from the main workings of tile train chase lease on the mustang claim still is appearing strong as the vi lize is sinking work lia haa been being lowered the I 1 doe concentrated in this as tile the ore is of such permanency and chov great ea er values than in the bottom of the ole other pipes samples taken from the preS present elit bot bo acet cei torn tom of the a depth of eighteen I 1 since hitting the high grade sulphide s slona chill c gold values of per ton the ore ney ley is close to tile the lime and schist coett contac although all sides are still in the li limestone westone tile the schist hanging wall is about eight feet from tile the ore As fast as this rica i ore is broken it is sacked and shipped to tile the si smelter nelter fossil remains found in the searchlight placer recently some most interesting fossils have been found whilst drifts were being run in the deep gravel channel in the searchlight claim in the main manhattan gulch about three miles west of the town at a depth of from seventy to eighty feet several large bones partially fossilized have been uncovered evidently portions of the skelton of a mammoth one bone in particular a portion of a shin bone was fifteen inches in width and nearly two feet in length this specimen was sent to the united states geological survey in washington ilig ton and from there goes to the smithsonian institute the latest specimen unearthed was a horn evidently from a species of buffalo not of large size but very well preserved and with curious deep indentations and ridges lengthwise with tile the horn manhattan red top mining company the company shaft of the red top has now reached a depth of eighty five feet in tile the bottom of the shaft there is a change of formation the metamorphic condition of the heavy shale shows the change plainly from tile the lime shale into the limestone indicating the proximity of the vein system which follows the limestone and which has been proven on both sides of the red top workings union amalgamated mining company superintendent durkee reports the following footage made in tile the amalgamated property during the week from the foot level the east drift adrift has advanced thirty two feet now a distance of feet from the shaft north cruss cut from raise in fissure two feet making a total of thirty feet west drift from no 3 north crosscut cross cut east six feet no 4 raise west ten feet a total of forty feet no 2 raise west five feet making a total for the weeks work of fifty five feet in the mine during the week there have been some machinery breakdowns which have cut down to some extent the footage usually made work is no now noar ar being concentrated in the last east drift with three shifts the flow of water from the east drift has slackened to a large extent so no further delays from that cause are anticipated the company mill kill has been supplied with ore extracted during development work as prosecuted on the fissure vein and the west ore body the west ore body contains high gold values but the e grade is irregular due to lime boulders occasionally showing indications point to the lime cutting out of the ledge however upon greater depth being made on the vein at the present it has been necessary to utilize ore sorters to pick out tile the lime from the ore by this means a good milling grade of ore is sustained the east drift has been driven on a fault plane and the drift has been in low grade ore for several feet this fault plane cuts the limestone bedding planes diagonally to keep keel the direct course of the east drift to cut the downward extension of the great free milling ore bodies developed from the upper levels in the earl claim it will be necessary to leave the fault plane above mentioned and take a more southeasterly course these earl ore bodies have yielded a large tonnage of ore of high milling grade the swanson lease which first devo developed loped them having milled nearly nearly worth of ore which averaged over 25 per ton in the mill the width between walls of the swanson ore bodies in many places was close to twenty feet from foot to lia hanging nging wall of the ledge basing a prediction from the increase in size and values of veins being developed from the foot level of the bath shaft now being operated by the company these earl ore bodies may prove to be veritable bonanzas upon developing them from tile the present bottom level of the compa iy ay workings meanwhile the milling of the ores being extracted during the present development work is paying mine and mill expenses with ease amalgamated extension mining company the crosscut cross cut in the amalgamated extension property encountered the limestone belt on the twentieth of may and has since been advanced crosscutting cross cutting the bedding planes of the lime drifting is now in progress to get under the ore shoot which shows so strongly on the surface of the property the geological conditions are perfect for ore to be soon encountered as a small break in the limestone is now coming into the face of the drift and gives up good bannings pann ings of coarse gold from a careful underground survey recently made it would indicate that the ore shoot should be encountered in about twe twenty nty six feet in advance of the present face A second shift of miners has been added to the working crew of the extension which should make the average speed of advancing the drift about seven feet per day |
